Adam Lambert's music video for "Whataya Want From Me" hit MTV and VH1 on Friday morning, and it is just as emotional as many of us were expecting. Adam spends much of the video alone, but eventually enters a world of paparazzi, avid fans, and people waiting to see what he will do next. The video itself represents something that we have all seen before--a celebrity struggling to find a balance between their public and private life--but Adam's video stands out for a few specifics reasons:
1. Diane Martel's direction made the video a thing of beauty. The heavy use of blues, blacks, and grays within the video gives it a somber feel, but there is just enough light at times to symbolize hope. The video never comes across as desperate; rather, Adam appears to be willing to throw himself into the confusion.
2. There was just enough going on. At first, I was worried that the entire video would be Adam sitting around by himself. That would have been a risky choice, and they also likely would've given the song have of an "emo" tone than it really needs. While "performances in front of crowds" are a bit cliche, it worked well in this video to have Adam out there with his fans.
3. The song itself works well for a video. Some songs are tough to represent in multiple forms, but the vulnerable lyrics of "Whataya Want From Me" give it a quality that only works better in video form.
Of course, the real issue is finding a place to watch it. There's a video on Youtube at this link, but I've decided not to embed it simply because it may not stay up. The best place to go for a high-quality video is Adam's official site.
After you watch it, come back here and let me know your thoughts!
