You'll recall that it was reported that Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj had settled their differences over a sex tape. If so, we won't see it until later in the season.
"American Idol" premiered its new season on Wednesday. Viewers who tuned in to see fireworks saw skyrockets go off. Nicki Minaj called Mariah Carey a “b*itch” not once, but three times (the embedded video shows their spat).
The tension was as thick as peanut butter. Minaj and Carey began their evening with a spat over Minaj's feathered hat, which was sitting on the judges' table. Carey said, "We can have accessories? I didn’t know that was allowed ... that’s all I’m gonna say." Minaj asked Carey, “Why’d you have to reference my hat?”
That was just the start.
Next, a contestant complimented Carey on “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” calling it the best modern-day Christmas song. When Carey noted that the song went back to no. 1 last year, Minaj said “She’s a b*tch; she’s a b*tch; she’s a b*tch.”
Carey fired back, “If she’s calling me something that begins with a b, I rebuke it.”
That wasn't the end of the sparring, by any means.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, Fox’s reality TV head Mike Darnell said things are going to heat up.
People said the passion between the two girls was invented,” Fox’s reality chief. It’s obviously real. That’s an interesting dynamite that we haven’t seen on one of these [singing competition] shows before.
Darnell wouldn't detail things, but he said the drama on the panel will “ramp up” between all the judges. "All I can say is that tonight things get even more interesting."
When reports of the feud first emerged, some thought it was fabricated for the sake of ratings. There are still some who think that way, but Darnell is saying "No, no, no." The feud eventually resulted in Carey bolstering her security detail.
