Tonight was the premiere of season 11 of American Idol and households all over the country were tuning in. For the first time in several seasons, this one got underway without any drama over any new judges coming in or leaving the show. Last year's formula worked well enough for a repeat this season.
Day one of auditions took place in Savannah, Georgia where a total of 42 individuals were selected to move on to the Hollywood rounds. There were several stand-outs who were given significant airtime during the show, but, as always, much time was dedicated to those who stood out for other reasons -- and not in a good way.
A young man named David Leathers, Jr., 17, was the first auditioner of the season, showing off pipes that sounded similar to a young Michael Jackson. He, coincidentally, went up against last year's winner, Scotty McCreery in a regional talent competition a couple years ago and came out on top, with McCreery coming in second. Talk about bragging rights!
Another teen auditioner, Stephanie Renae, got the thumbs up for her rendition of a song done by former American Idol, Carrie Underwood.
Tomorrow night the second day of auditions airs, which took place in Pittsburgh. What were your thoughts on tonight's show?
