American Idol left off last night with Symone Black toppling forward, off the stage, and onto the floor. She was immediately surrounded by her father, the judges, and other crew members, who were able to help her to her feet and walk her out of the auditorium. Finally, it was time for Lauren Mink, Jeremy Rosado, and Ethan Jones to learn their fate: Jeremy was the only one of the three to make it through.
All in all, 185 contestants made it through to the next round: the dreaded group round. Ken Warwick explained the rules for the groups, which included having 4-5 people and a mixture of members from day one and day two. They would have a list of 20 songs to choose from.
As always, there were stragglers still searching for groups, while the already-formed groups headed off to rehearse. The one who seemed to have the most difficulty was a cop from Indiana: Elisha. When she finally formed a group, they changed their song choice and left her in the dust.
Brielle made it through the group round last season, accompanied by Pia Toscano. This season, her mom leered in the distance, making sure she didn't get too bossy with her fellow group members. In all reality, she was just as bad as her daughter, as she tried not to be a "stage mom."
Symone Black returned with her father and a diagnosis of dehydration. She was told to find a group, and her dad also tried to avoid being a "stage dad." He remained at her side until she found a group to join and shooed him away.
Illness seemed to be floating around throughtout all of the contestants, and one, Gaby, even sat and rehearsed while holding a "barf bag" in her lap. Amy, the 24-year-old from Tennessee who has been living in a tent in the woods, also wasn't feeling well and had a fever. She told the camera she wasn't going to let the devil inside and continued to push through her illness.
In the group named MIT, Heejun and Phillip Phillips struggled to deal with the cowboy in their group, Richie, who was ordering each of them around and telling them how to dance. Heejun was frustrated about the different dance moves, facial expressions, and voices they had to work with. He even said he might go home the next day if things weren't going well.
Elisha's group temporarily lost their only male member - Christian caught whatever bug seemed to be floating around and disappeared for a couple hours. Even when he came back, he still wasn't 100% and hovered over a garbage can while the others bickered about how their song sounded.
As it got later and later, groups began to head off to bed and argue about whether or not to call it a night. The group called "The Betties" seemed to struggle with this the most. Half the group was ready for bed, while the other two wanted to stay up and keep working, so they each did what they wanted. The two who remained awake didn't go to bed until 5:11 am.
When morning rolled around, groups squeezed in last-minute rehearsals wherever they could - outside, in the bathroom, and while they sat in chairs and waited to go in and perform.
Just as the first group was about to sing, the show ended. It looks like we all will have to wait for next week Wednesday night to see how the group performances play out.
