American Idol Season 11-Episode Six Recap

Over hundreds of people have made it through to the vicious Hollywood round. But will the Portland, Oregon contestants be able to continue receive yeses from judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler?  Keep reading to find out.

The very first Golden Ticket to Hollywood was given out to quirky 21-year-old Brittany Zika, who dreamt about performing with Sara Bareilles one day, blew the judges away with her rendition of Brandi Carlile’s “The Story.”   Jennifer stated that Brittany’s voice was one of the prettiest voices they have heard so far.

Unfortunately, the Golden Ticket streak halted when 18-year-old Ben from Philadelphia butchered two current Top 40 songs that had Steven Tyler curse twice during Ben’s audition.   After receiving three no’s from the judges, Ben blamed his bad audition on his cold.

One singer who did not have any bad vibes was 24-year-old music teacher and church singer Jermaine Jones.  He belted the late Luther Vandross’s “Superstar” that showed an operatic baritone range and Jennifer declared that he had a natural gift and Steven commented that he had a spiritual voice.

The first audition of day two’s Portland auditions belonged to 27-year-old single mom Britnee Kellogg, whose ex-husband was unfaithful to her.  She belted a bluesy version of “You’re No Good” that had Jennifer Lopez singing along with her.   After she brought in her family and received encouragement from the On the Floor singer on successfully balancing being a mom and following her dreams.

Unfortunately, after Britnee’s audition, the judges delivered a streak of no’s that ended with the arrival of 22-year-old Liberian immigrant Romeo Diahn, whose vocals could remind viewers of the great Reggae legend Bob Marley.   Another 22-year-old that stood out in a good way was Naomi Gillies, who asked Steven Tyler permission to sing his hit “Cryin’.”  Naomi’s bluesy version intrigued the Aerosmith front man and his fellow judges as they sent her to Hollywood.

One of the most emotional auditions of the season came from 25-year-old dental assistant Jessica Phillips.   The Brooklyn native shared her personal struggle to nurse back her boyfriend of five years, D’Angelo, who suffered from a stroke that ended up with amnesia.   She persevered through the pain to deliver her rendition of Faith Evans’ “Again” that astonished the judges, who sent her to Hollywood.

Tomorrow, American Idol heads to St. Louis to discover new talent.
