American Idol: Season 11: Auditions #3 - San Diego recap

The San Diego auditions were held on the deck of an aircraft carrier, the USS Midway. For something different, the judges backs faced the open air and a small aircraft

The first contestant of the day, Jennifer Diley, showed up wearing something that was hardly more than a bikini - a tight red and white striped bandeau bikini top and short shorts that could easily have passed as denim underwear. She sang "With You," by Jessica Simpson. When the judges weren't impressed with her first song choice, she offered to sing "Hero," by Mariah Carey, since that shows off her voice better. The judges weren't impressed with that, either, so off she went, without a golden ticket.

Ashley Robles, a 26-year-old single mother from San Diego, California chose a bold song to sing for her audition: "I Will Always Love You," by Whitney Houston. The judges gave her a unanimous yes and said they would see her in Hollywood.

Jayrah Gibson, another 26-year-old, charmed the judges before he sang "Just Friends" for them. Randy said he thought he was mad good, Steven said it was great and the whole ball of wax, and Jennifer looked forward to him singing more melodic songs. Jayrah then compared his golden ticket to the one "from Charlie....the...the...the Factory."

Aubree Dieckmeyer, a 20-year-old receptionist, seemed to be a bit confused about what show she was auditioning for, as she kept telling us she couldn't wait to be America's next top model during her pre-audition interview. All three judges agreed that they liked her voice, and she received her golden ticket to Hollywood.

Ali Shields actually wrote and sang a song to Ellen DeGeneres in order to get on her show and meet her. After having success with that, she did some rapping for the Idol judge before getting down to business and singing Corrine Bailey Rae's "Like a Star." The judges all agreed that they liked her and passed her through to Hollywood.

Kyle Crews is part of a fraternity at UC-Berkley and is also a ladies man. He sang "Angel of Mine," by Monica, and dedicated it to Jennifer. The judges were surprised to hear his voice, and Randy told him he sounded nothing like he looks. They encouraged him to work on his look and gave him three yesses.

It was apparent that the decision to have auditions out in the open air may not have been the best, as we saw outtakes from all of the interruptions due to boats, planes, and birds flying, floating, and passing by.

Jim Carrey's 24-year-old daughter, Jane, was next up and sang "Something to Talk About." Jennifer was shocked to see her all grown up, since she had last seen her as a two-year-old on the set of In Living Color. In the end, the judges couldn't turn down Jim's daughter or her talent, and she received a golden ticket to Hollywood.

Jason Hamlin, a golf course mechanic, who goes by the name of Wolf, sang "Midnight Special" by Creedence Clearwater Revival. The judges allowed him to bring out his git-fiddle for a second song, and it was clear that he was much more comfortable in that setting. The judges each gave him a yes and sent him on his way.

American Idol is back on its regular night, this Wednesday night at 8/7:00 central, when the auditions move to Aspen, Colorado.
