American Idol: Season 11 audition cities officially announced

Doesn't it feel like Season 10 of American Idol just ended? It may be hard to believe, but news is already circulating about next year's auditions. Seven cities will host the show, with some new places popping up that we haven't seen on the list in recent years. Auditions kick off as soon as June 28th, so if you are hoping to try out, it is time to make arrangements!

There are actually no duplicate audition cities this season as compared to last season. Season 11 audition cities are as follows:

  • St. Louis, Missouri: Tuesday, June 28th (Scottrade Center) This is the audition city of Carrie Underwood, who won Season 4.
  • Portland, Oregon: Saturday, July 2nd (Rose Garden) Believe it or not, Portland has actually never made the list of audition cities prior to this year.
  • San Diego, California: Friday, July 8th (Petco Park) Back in Season 7, David Archuleta, Michael Johns, Chikezie, Carly Smithson, and David Hernandez all auditioned in San Diego. Will five finalists from this season get their start there this year? San Diego was also the city in which contestants received the most golden tickets to Hollywood.
  • Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: Friday, July 15th (Heinz Field)
  • Charleston, South Carolina: Friday, July 22nd (North Charleston Coliseum) Charleston is another city that hasn't seen auditions since back in Season 7.
  • Denver, Colorado: Friday, July 29th (INVESCO Field at Mile High) Casey James auditioned in Denver during Season 9, just two short years ago.
  • Houston, Texas: Friday, August 26th (Reliant Park)

Registration usually takes place for the two days leading up to auditions and must be completed in person. In the first round, contestants audition for a panel of judges, along with three of their fellow competitors. It is in this first round that the largest number of cuts is made - out of what can be over 10,000 contestants, just around 100-200 are asked to come back and audition in front of the producers. Contestants don't meet the judges we watch weekly on television until the final round of auditions, when even more cuts have been made. This ends up being sometime in early fall.

American Idol is set to return next January, although Jennifer Lopez may not be a judge, as she is the only one who has not yet signed on for Season 11.
