On Wednesday, Jan. 16, Fox aired the first episode of the twelfth season of their hit show “American Idol”.
The debut episode was met with much anticipation, as the revamped judging panel of Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, and Keith Urban, alongside longtime favorite Randy Jackson, had seemed to fascinate the public.
As Wednesday’s episode rolled on, we were introduced to 15-year old Shane from Long Island, New York.
Within seconds, it became clear that Shane was looking to pay homage to one of today’s biggest superstars by following a similar path.
“I’m a rap artist, I’m a pop artist,” Shane would claim. “When you see people like Justin Bieber, he started out on YouTube and now he’s a sensational superstar and I want to be just like him.
“This is one of my lifetime dreams and if I get a ‘Yes’ today, it would be a miracle and I will make it to the top no matter what,” Shane would add.
Upon being introduced to the judges, Shane pointed out that he had certainly been practicing ahead of his big audition and he claimed to have a sense of what fans were looking for.
“I sing in my room, thinking it’s a concert, so I will get ready for a real one,” Shane said. “I know what the audience wants and they just don’t want a singer, they want a character.”
Nick Minaj seemed enamored by his remarks.
“I feel you already baby,” she stated.
However, Shane’s take on Bieber’s “One less lonely girl” wasn’t met with great reviews, as he was denied an approval from the judges, one that would have sent him to Hollywood for the next round of competition.
Not wanting to end his day on a sour note, Minaj attempted to pick up Shane’s spirit shortly after his snub.
“You’re special,” Minaj stated moments before embracing Shane. “Just not for this competition. But as far as life in general, you own it.”
Asked if he was disappointed at not getting an approval, Shane seemed to be taking everything in stride.
“Not really, because, in the end, Nicki Minaj kissed me,” he stated.
