American Idol Frontrunner Caleb Johnson Disses Fans

American Idol has had its share of drama. Just last week, producers created drama by adding a twist to the elimination show.

A few days ago, Jena Irene and Alex Preston could have possibly been the most hated contestants on the show due to how they voted during the twist, but this week, frontrunner Caleb Johnson has successfully taken that title.

During his post interview with AfterBuzz TV host Jason Ikeler, Johnson dissed his fans -- even throwing out a slur word to describe his Twitter followers. When asked why he doesn't use social media as often as his fellow Idol hopefuls, Johnson replied with the following:

"[Twitter] gives access to a bunch of retards to talk to me," said Johnson. "I don't really enjoy having to see somebody telling me what song I have to sing. I think at this point of the competition, I can pick and choose my own songs and represent me. I don't need 10,000 people saying, 'You should sing this, you should sing that. Listen to me!' Fortunately, guys, I'm going to listen to myself, whether you like it or not."

O.K? Although semi-understandable where he is coming from, was the slur word truly necessary? Ikeler told us, exclusively, how shocked he was to hear Johnson express himself that way:

"[Johnson] is always candid in interviews, but you obviously can't use that word," says Ikeler. "I hope it was just a slip of the tongue, but when you're on a national television show, you're under a microscope."

Ikeler also said that he has already received comments and messages via Twitter (@JasonIkeler) from fans saying they want Johnson voted off due to his words.

Since that interview last Thursday night, the video has gone viral. Johnson eventually realized he made a mistake and released this statement through his Facebook page:

"For the record that juvenile comment I made in the interview was not directed towards my fans but to the wackos that send hundreds of hate messages a day to me! You guys are amazing and I cannot thank you enough for your support. Sorry if it offended anybody it was the wrong choice of words. Also I greatly appreciate it when you guys give me song suggestions but it gets really overwhelming at the volume it comes in so please understand ! Rock on !:)"

Too little, too late? Johnson was the frontrunner, alongside Jena Irene prior to this week. It will be very interesting to see where the voting goes now. Maybe Jessica Meuse was smart to have drama during Hollywood Week rather than so close to the end. Who knows, she may take it all merely because she is playing it brilliantly.
