'American Idol': Anoop Desai - Adam Lambert 'controversy' cleared up

For the span of less than 24 hours, comments made by former "American Idol" contestant Anoop Desai were reverberating fast through Adam Lambert's fan base -- when it looks like what we are really dealing with here is a classic case of something being placed out of context.

First, let's look the quote that started such an internet firestone, which was Anoop's response when asked about his "brand" of music:

“It’s smart. It’s intelligent. I’m a gentleman. My music is real. It talks about life and situations I can relate to. You’re never going to hear me singing a song like Ke$ha or Adam [Lambert]. That’s not my lane. My lane is smart and hip. It’s hooky, it’ s catchy. I want to appeal to simple universal characteristics we all want, which is love.”

Just based on this quote alone, it's easy to see that it could be taken in a variety of ways. Is he trying to make any sort of commentary about Adam's music? If we were looking at an artist with no history of working with Adam, you could say so -- however, both of these guys have been frequently complimentary of each other over the course of the past year or so, with Adam even hyping Anoop's music on his Twitter page.

After receiving some complaints from some of Adam's fans, Anoop tweeted the following message:

"Whoa..reading my mentions. How are some of y'all going to tell me I'm dissing my friends? Hilariously out of line and miscontextualized. First of all, interviews are not direct quotes. If they were they'd be long as anything. Point I was making: my brand is not the same as other major respected artists out there. Know some of y'all love Adam and so do I. The end."

The original site of the story also attempted to clear things up, saying that Anoop did not intend to create any sort of disrespect towards Adam or Ke$ha with his words, and that he was actually trying to articulate that his music was merely different.

Does this put an end to all of the drama for you?

I like Anoop, he has always supported Adam and likewise. So yeah, I'm over it.

  • pr62 1 year ago

ANYTHING can be taken out of context. especially with the press which can be dangerous as hell. lately, adam seems to be a target. we all know why,no use repeating it. but he has us, his fans, who adore and want to protect him from the bad guys out there. and remember, twenty years from now you'll be hearing adam on classic rock stations. rock on, gorgeous!!

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

    i haven't decided yet-i am not a big fan of Anoop's

  • Victoria Parker 1 year ago

Whether a fan of Anoop is neither here or there..to each their own..but I do know that Anoop and Adam are great friends and respect each other whether personal or in music!! I did not believe his quote was demeaning towards Adam....the media would like for us to believe there is a problem between Anoop and Adam when we know there is not!!.....making something out of nothing and twisting the quotation from Anoop....damn media!!!

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

I never really cared in the first place lol!! I don't follow Anoop. His opinion is of no consequence to me. I checked out tweets to him & about 6 people asked him to clear it up. So not sure why its thought of as a drama. Well Anoop got a little free publicty. I don't get him. Not sure why he dropped out of school to go into singing. It's a fickle business and he has a snowball's chance in hell of making it.

I just think he could have used a different example, say Ke$ha and Katy Perry. Why he had to bring up Adam's name is anyone's guess...maybe because he knows it brings attention?

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Well, yeah. Would anyone have paid any attention to that interview if not for the Adam mention?

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

i agree with you, why did he even mention adam? i don't get it! anyway, good luck with you smart, intelligent album anoop!

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

I think he is full of.......himself, always was, always will be.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

I think he was using Adam's name to get some attention for himself.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Adam is getting the bad end of everything here lately...Noticed his name is gone off of the best selling concerts...I do have to say there is one thing Adam does on stage that his older fans does not care for, leave it to his singing and quite putting on the gay kisses...you don't see the others doing that....be classy which I think that he is. Other entertainers (men) don't kiss there band.....members....May be it doesn't hurt and I don't mind it, but he is an entertainer......I dont think it is rock and roll....sorry and I love Adam's music, the best.....

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

I don't think your really a big fan of Adam. You are just spewing your mouth to make him look bad. A real fan of Adam would never talk like this.

  • tess4ADAM 1 year ago

Sorry! No TRUE fan of ADAM would 'diss' him in any way .. shape .. or form .. so your 'declaration' of 'love' for ADAM's music is SHALLOW at best. ADAM is fighting bigotry from TPTB in the music industry and should be getting TOTAL support from his fans NOT 'Criticism' ... he gets enough of that from his detractors. No one expects you or anyone to be in total agreement with everything but posting your criticism on these message boards isn't helping the cause either!!!

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

He just needs better material and a hit song. I thought for sure he'd have a #1 hit by now. All the rest of this stuff like kissing band mates and Anoop's commentary is just background noise. Eventually you need a hit or you're just history.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Not really buying it. This name dropping isn't necessary unless it is in a obvious positive tone. I don't think Anoop is a nice guy, and I still think it was a slight to Adam. Sorry, never a fan because his performances were lacking and his personality even worse.

  • kittykat60 1 year ago

Yup, Adam's name = attention. Anoop I don't like the fact that what you said made it sound like Adam's music is not about love, if you're such a fan you'd know better! imo! If you have nothing good to say about Adam in your interviews please don't use his name, try doing it on your own. Peace, Love & Light Always.

  • annchsc04 1 year ago

I agree! Adam is all about love! He adores and respects all people. Adam already has enough negative comments from people. Im sure it really hurt when he heard it coming from a "friend"

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

I am an avid Adam fan for sure, but when we went to American Idol tour show in Kansas City, Anoop was one of the most polite and nice people I met....other than Adam who didn't come out because of the crazy Westboro church.......No, one is as good as Adam and his music and his wonderful warm heart.....

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Obviously Anoop has missed the entire message of what Adam is all about.

LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! AND MUCH MORE.!!!!!!!!!

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

It's a classic case of name dropling to get attention. Anoop has worked with Adam before and knows the media storm that follows Adam no matter what he does.
And it worked! Would anyone be interested in Anoop's interview if he hadn't mentioned Adam?
    Not really.
    Cheap, Anoop. Really cheap.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Over what? Who the hell is Anoop anyway? What a weird name. Never heard of him. Was he on that show?

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

the more people 'discuss' this non-event, the more press Anoop gets.. let it die a nice quiet 'uneventful death'.....
Not to mention all this fuss makes (we) adam fans look a bit too possesive. Adam is a big boy and has no problem calling out people who say negative things against him or his music.....matter of fact he is an expert at it.....

  • Someher 1 year ago

I never cared for Anoops music and he's always be enoverly pompous and a tad full of himself, for no reason. How is his album and single doing? Exactly. He just used Adams name for attention, and the reported printed it for hits. This is basically the most attention Anoop will get these days, and he is no Adam Lambert, so enjoy it dude.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

How many times does Adam need to SAY that he and Anoop are friends. So... LEAVE ANOOP ALONE!

  • tmd 1 year ago

Come on ... don't believe everything you read ... remember the 'feud' that was supposed to have been going on between ADAM & Kris during AI8? Nothing but a load of BS ... no truth to it at all. Anoop is/was a friend of ADAM's in the past so I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt unless I hear otherwise from ADAM!!

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

maybe the words "smart" and "intelligent" touched some nerves...as if the music of other artists are not smart at all...

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

anoop i dont like you at all- dont like ur music dont like ur name anoop- ur not a decetn guy ur full of pretentious.i think that way towards annop.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

lesson of all this is SIMPLE------reporters, radio dj, even Adam L. friends shouldn't talk about Adaml. at all.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

I really don't care what this anoop said.. If he's that smart/intelligent how come he not won AI8 or got the second place. It' already proven with adam's platinum selling and the sold-out concert. It's all about LoVE

The author of the original article, according to his own description, thrives on controversy related to American Idol. He links to sites such as "Vote For the Worst" and Rickey. It's amazing to me that people who should know better by now continue to fall for this crap. AI was an event that no longer defines the two artists, and the mentality should be archived.

  • Dee12 1 year ago

Sorry, to clarify, I should have said, "the American Idol fan mentality should be archived as well."

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

All a bunch of blown out of context nonsense. I am an Adam fan, but lets choose our fights people--this one doesn't qualify.

  • ATLbongo 1 year ago

The only thing Anoop is guilty of is a poorly placed sentence. This statement is true: “You’re never going to hear me singing a song like Kesha or Adam.” Anoop isn’t going to put out super-pop songs like them. That's not his style. However, what's driving this controversy is the fact that this statement was surrounded by Anoop describing his style or “brand” in positive ways. Big deal - we can’t blame Anoop, or any artist trying to make a name for himself, for saying positive things about his style or brand. If anything, Anoop is *too* intelligent for the music business. He overthinks things. Most other artists would have responded with a generic comment like "my brand is about love and situations that everybody can relative to." So, leave Anoop alone. He's putting out some good music.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

I'm ready to let it go, unless someone wants to give us the original context. Otherwise, it was kind of a cheap shot to take at a friend. Done and done. : |

I would like to put some perspective on this, on Anoop. Initially, he didn't make the top 10 on Idol and was brought BACK by the judges "wild card".
He is a spoiled little only child with an enormous sense of entitlement.
Last year, in July 2009 in San Diego, hubby and I stayed at a Hotel very near the Sports Arena where the event was held. The afternoon OF..at around 2:30PM, we went to the Chili's next to the event to get a bite and right next door was a Chick Filet. As we exited our car, we saw a group of people walking toward the Chick Filet and they were Allison, Kris Allen, Michael Sarver, Matt Girard, Lil Rounds and Anoop. When they all went inside Chick Filet, we decided to see if we could get a photo taken with them.Allison was shy but very sweet. Matt was funny and outgoing. As was Sarver. Lil was a doll and Kris pointed at my Tee-shirt which had Paul McCartney on it and smiled and said "Hey, I like your shirt!" and I smiled and said "Hey Jude!", we laughed and then he graciously posed with us for a photo (as did the others mentioned)
Meanwhile, Anoop, scowl on his face, high-tailed it out of there as quickly as he could so we ran after him and he reluctantly posed (after a little eye-rolling, as if he couldn't be bothered!) and then they were off, back to the venue.
Later that evening, we got Adam's autograph at the barricade and a few photos and he was as sweet as cherry pie! We also caught up with Scott, Gokey, and Megan.
Anoop was the ONLY Idol that sent off negative vibes.
IMO (and my husband's) he was never worthy and should have counted himself very lucky to ever be on the same stage as Adam.
That said, I agree with the poster who commented that the entire Idol mentality needs to be archived now, especially when it comes to Lambert.
He had NO EQUAL then and has none now. He is in a league of his OWN and shouldn't be compared to any of the female pop artists. He is definitely MALE and more vocally talented than any mortal man singing pop or rock today, period.
    Thank you.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

OMG shut up you are crazy, he is just a singer, you treat him like he is jesus or something, poor guy has the craziest bunch of fans.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Typical Glambert reaction. If they "think" it slights the great Adam they pounce. (not the first time either). You really need to read before you tweet. Makes your entire fanbase look stupid. Anoop didn't diss St. Adam. He said he would sing what he sings, not his style. Get over thinking that St. Adam is the only entertainer out there. Lot's of people don't like his style. Fact. He's not the greatest ever. No one is. Live with it.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

So how long have you been going to Top Idol?

  • Wicked Glitter 1 year ago

"St. Adam", I really like the sound of that. Adam is a saint, and we love him. We will always stick up for him, and if that makes us crazy, well then I quess that makes us crazy.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

And you really need to check your spelling/grammar/usage before you post. You make yourself look stupid.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

bunch of air head glamberts ..... keep doing what you are doing !

  • Wicked Glitter 1 year ago

We will keep doing what we are doing, and that's why Adam is an icon. Plus he he is the most talented, gorgeous, and charismatic man alive, and lets not forget the sexiest.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Don't like him. It wad a cheep shot to get his name out. He was s snooze then and he is a snooz now. Boring to look and think of cand never liked his voice.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Have read the 'quote' a few times, and whichever way I read it, it seems a dig at Adam, which OK everyone is entitled to their opinion, but it doesn't sound good coming from a supposedly good friend, when Adam has been nothing but positive about him.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

adam fans love to atack everybody, they don't respect anyone's opinion and their first reaction is always atack, it wasn't the first time and it won't be the last.

  • Wicked Glitter 1 year ago

I'm a huge fan of Adam's, and I don't attack others without cause. I will, however defend myself, and Adam if necessary. Unfortunetly some people are jealous of Adam because of his talent. looks, charisma. and his huge fan base. Anoop brought up Adam's name solely to sell his album. Adam has always supported other artists, but because they are jealous they refuse to support him. Too bad, because Adam is someone who is there for his friends.

  • Wicked Glitter 1 year ago

Anoop is a snob, therefore I will never listen to, or buy his music.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

I don't buy him his explanation. If A is smart and B is different than A, it does mean B is not smart. Am I wrong? Whatever, is not a big deal.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

This was no big deal and no story. I agree with one of the negative commenters that his fans can seem a little crazy. We need to support Adam where it matters and not get bent out of shape by some silly comment that was probably taken out of context.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Most of what I have read are not attacks BY Adam fans but rather ON Adam fans for simply questioning the words attributed to Anoop which, as printed, imply that he feels Adam's songs are not hip or smart or hooky as Anoop claims are "his lane". I expect Anoop's music will not be "my lane" since Adam's music is, but that is not an attack on Anoop or those who like him. Fan wars are simply a waste of time and energy.
