'American Idol:' Adam Lambert moves into AC charts, Kris Allen goes Christian

Although Adam Lambert may be losing some ground in terms of top 40 airplay, the "American Idol" runner-up is finding ways to make up for it across a number of other charts. According to USA Today's weekly look at "Idol" airplay, Adam in now in the top ten for Adult Contemporary with "Whataya Want From Me." This marks the first time that Adam has found his way into that territory, which proves that he has staying power with mature audiences and can also sustain on the radio outside of just "hit music" stations.

The same good news can go to reigning champ Kris Allen, who saw his first single "Live Like We're Dying" rise up to #29 on the Christian music charts. Allen does not openly sing about his faith in any of his music, but the message of "Live" has been able to successfully transfer into a more religious market.

In terms of overall airplay numbers, both singers are starting to lose spins as their songs have been on the radio for over four months. The good news for Adam? Even though it may be time to move on to a new song, "Whataya Want From Me" is still the most-played song by an "American Idol" alum for the time being.

Are you happy that Adam Lambert and Kris Allen are able to succeed on a number of charts? Let me know your thoughts with a comment and click here to check out photos from this week's episode of "American Idol."

I know a bit about the radio industry - if radio stations had played "Whataya Want From Me" earlier on, it could have cracked the Top 15 on the Top 40 charts. I still remain uninformed, as someone on the periphery of the radio biz, as to exactly what the problem was in regard to Top 40 stations playing WWFM. Others have suggested to me that it's all about payola - I like to be a little bit more optimistic than that... I truly do think WWFM was relevant enough to receive more spins on appropriately formatted stations earlier on and had it gotten them, would have cracked the top 15 of the Top 40.

I'm happy but to correct your reporting Adam hasn't lost any spins he actually gained 148 spins this week.

IMO, WWFM would have gotten much higher ratings if some DJ's had not dragged their feet on playing it, especially on stations in the Bible Belt areas. Some stations still will not play WWFM, or will not play it without a specific request, regardless of its ratings. I don't think Allen ever had that problem even when his song was first released. Can't help but wonder why...

    Blame on radio station.........lol

It was like pulling teeth to get radio stations to play WWFM. They finally started playing it after fans called in requesting it nonstop. Once people heard WWFM, it started getting the positive attention it deserved. I just hope radio stations frequently play the next single, If I Had You. Or else there will have to be another fan intervention.

My .02. Adam’s album is just too musically diverse to be true top 40. Adam knows so much about music and can interpret and sing anything so he does which is not the top 40 mold where song after song after song by the smae artist sound the same!! WWFM is a very adult contemporary song-most of the top 40 right now are production heavy hip-hop, pop and dance not ballads except R&B. I think with the recent success of David Guetta it might not be a bad idea to release one of the remixes of FYE in a dance-heavy pop markets like Miami and LA.

I think at #13 on top 40 that is pretty damned good. No reason to explain it's good! If it cracked top 10 then they'd be articles and whining on why isn't it in the top 5 on the top 40. If it hit #5 on top 40 then people would whine about it not being #1. If it hit #1 people would whine about why doesn't he have another single out or I'm sure they'd be something else to whine about. Get my drift?

@tommie you may lol.. but the radio stations have ALL the power about whether your music is played. Many DJ's and radio programmers across the country seemed to be uncomfortable with playing Adam's music in the beginning. Now thankfully, things seem to be much better. Almost all of the radio market is owned and run by Clear Channel Communications which tends to favor the Republican, conservative talk radio mindset. Which means that songs about war, violence, rape, murder, thugs and hoes is perfectly fine, but a song sung by an openly gay, confident man is scary.

I agree with musicman that the negative comments will never stop no matter how much success Adam has.

Also, none of the bloggers never seemed to mention that Adam FYE went to #5 on the Billboard Dance Chart. Right now WWFM is charting on 8 Billboard charts!

I'm excited about KRIS tonight! Just read this:
KRIS ALLEN's "Live Like We're Dying" moves to Mainstream Top 40 Recurrents chart, where it enters at #1, giving Kris his 3rd Billboard #1. YAY KRIS!!!

  • Kris Fan 2 years ago

Kris didn't "go Christian" - he IS a Christian, singing pop/rock songs - that's all. It just so happens that this particular single fits into the Christian music genre (which is nice that it can cross over)! GO KRIS - YOU ROCK!

  • Kris the Cutie! 2 years ago

Just want to say that Kris is ABSOLUTELY HUNKY ADORABLE, and ALL MAN! Sorry, just had to get that off my chest! Now I'm done. Hope he's enjoying life tonight, wherever he is! Love, love, love him!

Ken Warwick of American Idol just spilled the beans to Entertainment Weekly's Michael Slezak that 19E had to help out Adam Lambert because he was FLOPPING really bad at the beginning.

Why did 19E have to help that Adam out?

  • Scooter's Mom 2 years ago

Love, love, love Kris. Puzzled though why today when googling Kris Allen, the first article that comes up starts with Adam???? Interesting....

  • Vicki Hackwriter 2 years ago

Kris didn't "go Christian" - he IS a Christian, singing pop/rock songs, Well said for the crummy writer Mattt who lives off selling Kris Allen to the mass. Get your facts right O KAY! Hey I also heard Adam was failing to repay all the money AI dumped on his screaming career if thats what you call it. It was really stoopid to have that thang on AI as mentior since he cant sell music like susan boyle, madonna, black eyed peasssssssssssssssssssss. Dump him and cut your loss.

Great to hear both Kris and Adam are doing great.

.I hope Danny and Allison and the other contestants are doing good too.
