Adam Lambert has been a frequent advocate of music education in schools, and on Thursday he allowed his actions to speak louder than words. According to the Los Angeles Times, the "American Idol" runner-up paid a visit to Belvedere Middle School on Thursday, where he donated musical instruments as a representative of charity site DonorsChoose.org and his fans (who donated close to $300,000 to the cause).

While the private question-and-answer session with the kids was certainly entertaining, one of the true highlights came when the singer gave a special performance on "Whataya Want From Me" with the kids playing their own musical instruments. It was a relaxed, easy-going performance that is more or less the polar opposite of what we've come to expect from this "master of theatrics."

Adam recently returned to Los Angeles following a string of performances in New York. He has an upcoming performance in Indio, California and will also be on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" during its first week in March.

What do you think of the performance? Check out the video below and let me know your thoughts with a comment.

    Matt - What's a "charity rendition" of a song????

The video was wonderful - you could see Adam was impressed with the kids - especially when the kids with recorders started playing - what a great sound they put out. It was interesting watching him trying to find the key at the beginning. Watching the teacher was interesting too - tho she seemed to distract Adam a bit - probably because she was so lovely. What a great thing Adam did! I bet he'd like to be able to go to every school that received their DonorsChoose requests because of Adam's wonderful fans.

This is to the "haters" of Adam Lambert...there is another side to a generous man who loves kids...this had to bring the ego's of the children up!! Feeling good about theirselves is what Adam accomplished...This session was "Pricelss"...

Victoria I think you said it all but you know I gotta chime in! It's so good to see a performer do such an amazing thing and for children! This is awesome! You can tell it was hard for him to sing along and find the right key/pitch but those kids really adored what he was doing and Adam ... well, you can tell how moved he was at the fact that they were playing his music! Just one word...ADAMAZING!
