'American Idol:' Adam Lambert fans rise up after negative review

If you are going to say something negative about Adam Lambert, then you best be prepared for a storm of comments coming your way. Mikael Wood of the Los Angeles Times quickly found that out, after he had this to say about the "American Idol" runner-up's recent performance at Wango Tango Saturday night:

Adam Lambert seemed intent on summoning a similar jolt of transgressive energy but came up short, offering plenty of fine-grain glam-rock detail (including a rhinestone-encrusted in-ear monitor) but little of the in-your-face spectacle he delivered during his climb toward fame on “American Idol.”

Inside the big tent at last, Lambert went unexpectedly small.

As the times has now pointed out, a number of people have already written in to express their displeasure with Wood's review. From an outside perspective of someone who was not in attendance, I tend to agree with the fans on this one -- though Youtube videos may not tell the full tale of the concert, that Wango Tango footage of Adam online showed an electric performer willing both to take risks and have a good time singing his biggest hits. (He was miles ahead of some of the other performers, including Adam's former "kissing partner" in Ke$ha.)

What did you think of Adam Lambert at the concert? Let me know your thoughts with a comment and stay tuned for more "American Idol" news. To view recent photos of Adam from Wango Tango, follow the link here.

I didn't go to the concert. Pity. But I've seen him LIVE. Amazing. And some videos of the concert by fans are awesome!
All the people around me have been blown away by his LIVE performances, something he's credited for. Maybe he hasn't got enough hits yet - just a rookie and with all the radio thing blah blah blah. Maybe that's what gave the reporter the impression?
Anyway, I don't doubt his star power and live level.

How can you look at the picture above from the Wango Tango, listen to his set on Youtube and say that he is less energized or "in your face" than on AI? Adam has gotten many, many reviews that were impressed with his vocals so Wood's review seems more like someone that needed to grasp for hits on their space at the expense of Adam, rather than a true and fair assessment of Adam's performance.

I have not yet been lucky enough to see Adam live, but from what I've seen online, he's amazing! His vocals are awesome, and I love his CD...but his live performances really say it all. If anyone at Wango Tango didn't like his performance, they probably just don't care for his type of music...as I don't care for some of the other performers there that night...to each his/her own is what I say...but Adam sure is beautiful :)

  • lily 2 years ago

adam as usual gave a spectacular performance. i realized he was not the headliner and there was a mixture of fans that night so he did not get 100% attention. he did not lipsynch, i don't think he ever will.

I think any critic or journalist that writes a review without actually seeing the performance should be fired from that job! I've known the same thing to happen on new CD reviews. Some can't be bothered and just listen to snippets of the songs and therefore don't give a fair review and that can reallty hurt an artist.
Adam has to be seen to be believed, he is that good and he works very hard at pleasing his fans.

Mikael Wood kind of sounds like our nations leaders meaning...you don't have to go to the concert to write a review anymore than I need to read a states immigration law before voting no on it!
Now, I have seen Adam perform, at Gridlock New Year's Eve, and have tickets for his July 27th performance, I know Adam's music, I know what I'm going to see. Some performers need a multiple of dancers, fireworks and a variety of lights (show) to entertain and that's fine. I’ve already read complaints about Adam having a few dancers on stage, that it is a distraction from watching Adam, all any entertainer is required to do his perform his songs and Adam does that better than most. He’s new to venues and he will only get bigger.

Ok, lemme get this straight. This joker actually wrote a review WITHOUT going to the concert and commented on Adams weak performance? I'm sorry, but is that even legal? Lol.

    EPIC FAIL.

It's about time that so called "journalists" (i.e. Mikael Wood) understand that they are FREE to write what ever they want in an article but than they are FREE to take the consequences of their acts.
Adam's fans are the last ones to accept the incompetence, and the lack of professionalism proven by Mikael Wood.

Mikael Wood, next time try to use your brains while writing; you'll be surprised to observe that it's not painful.

    Thank you Mr. Matt Carter

While this nobody reviewer continues to disparage greatness (apparently sight unseen), Mr Lambert continues to sell millions of records worldwide and break sell-out records all over the country.

If you had one wish and you could be this reviewer or you could be Adam Lambert, which one would you choose? Case closed.

  • Sharon 2 years ago

I wasn't at the concert but based on the y-tubes looks like he put on a great show and got a great reception being in a group of performers that are not really his genre (other than Beiber and Ke$ha).

  • Allie 2 years ago

I think you are all reading this article incorrectly. I believe the author of this article is the one who did not attend the concert.

"From an outside perspective of someone who was not in attendance, I tend to agree with the fans on this one..."

Mr. Wood most likely ~did~ attend the concert and apparently watched with his eyes closed and earplugs in. I did not go to the concert, but I've watched the videos and Adam was as dynamic and fantastic as ever. Mr. Wood's review is still FAIL.

  • Anita 2 years ago

Adam was great as usual. Reviewer was deaf and blind.

  • Laurie 2 years ago

Adam was his usual f---ing fantastic self!! He gets better and better with each performance. The guy who wrote that review must be deaf, and certainly doesn't recognize true musical genius. He has no business writing concert reviews. FYI Mr. Woods -- NO ONE can match Adam's vocal range, showmanship, charisma, and intelligence!

  • terie 2 years ago

Who is Mr. Wood? Who are you Mr. Wood? Would anyone know who you are if you didn't 'diss' ADAM LAMBERT? I THINK NOT!! Then WHY should I care a 'twit' about your 'AHEM' review? I don't. My eyes were enough for me to decide for myself via Ytube videos that ADAM is a SHOWMAN EXTRAORDINAIRE and whatever you say IS NOT IMPORTANT!! NOW .. maybe Mr. Wood would like to view the videos from Wango Tango. Nah! I THINK NOT!! He got his hits!!

I was not at Wango Tango, but I did see Adam perform at 'The Palace Auburn Hills' in Michigan for the 'Idols Live' tour. All they had to do was flash a picture of Adam up on the screen, and the entire place went crazy. His performance electrified the whole room. I bought tickets to see Adam when he performs at 'The Royal Oak Theatre' on June 18th. It was not easy getting tickets for this show. People are coming from all around the world to see him. This tour is going to be unbelievable. Only Lady Gaga equals Adam in showmanship. I would love to see them perform together. 'Fever' would be great!

  • Susan 2 years ago

I don't know about others but the only reason I searched for Wango Tango on the Internet was to find Adam's performances! He is always brilliant and was born to perform. I don't listen to or respond to anything negative about Adam because no one will ever change my mind. Adam is all about the positives in life so that's where I choose to stay. I will always support Adam, period!

  • Reba 2 years ago

One of Adam's major fan sites asked fans not to comment on the negative review. It was clearly done just to incite comments. I did watch other performers on UTube just to see what was out there. Adam clearly ignites a response that none--except Bieber--can equal. You can like his music or not, but he is an amazing entertainer. -

Bet Mr. Wood wrote on purpose. I was at the concert, few rows back, stage left. So close, I could see the performers without the camera's zoom. Adam was different than the other after him - he sang LIVE and danced! Took 1250+ pics and 3 hrs of video, including the public. You should have been there to see people stand up, hush and record Sleepwalker. No one talked - the whole Center went quiet - unheard of. Bieber fans around me were in awe. Members of my posse (teenage Bieber fans) were disappointed in Ke$ha and Bieber but for the first time understood my enchantment with Adam. Then Akon had to take his shirt off to get noticed, Ke$ha was simply vulgar and trashy and J.B. needs a new pair of jeans so he won't have to pull his up every 5 seconds. Also singing lessons, dance lessons - send him to couple of stage tutors and a tailor or two, will ya? Usher was good, but it was mostly a backup track he made noises to & had too many make-out partners. Just wanted my 2 cents in.

The AUDIENCE GOT ADAM LAMBERT AND THAT IS ONLY REVIEW THAT MATTERS AND WOOD IS ONLY ONE PERSON,ALL THE OTHER REVIEWS WERE RAVING ABOUT ADAM!!YOU WERE NOT AT THE CONCERT,YOU WERE MOSTLY LIKE HOME SMOKING YOUR SHOES....THE ONLY THING THAT IS SMALL IS YOUR BRAIN!!

  • Ruth 2 years ago

I was lucky enough to be at the concert of Wango Tango and I can only tell you how excited I was to hear the uproar of screams when Adam came on stage. His performance was stellar as usual. His vocals, especially on Sleepwalker, took my breath away. He is pitch-perfect, totally professional in his performance. The whole 4 song set was amazing and I was toally in awe the whole time. I am so grateful that I was able to see Adam live. There's nothing like it. He is electrifying!

I have tickets to see him on July 27 and 28 in Costa Mesa. I tried to get tickets to see him in Las Vegas but could not. Tomorrow I will try to get tickets for the San Francisco tour date on July 23. I absolutely love Adam and I will always support him and his music. I can't wait for more!

  • Lesley 2 years ago

Adam was amazing in Wango Tango! He's always getting better and better. Not that many artists can be that creative, inspiring and growing all the time. I'm really excited to see him live at Bethleham in Aug!
And I believe professional reviewers wouldn't be biased and should respect the obvious truth. So maybe Mr. Mikael Wood of the LA times just isn't one of them.

  • Kate 2 years ago

I thought his performance was excellent. But we're all entitled to our opinion. I've learned to ignore the delusional.

Adam Lambert should have somehow dragged possibly the greatest vocalist to ever grace this planet onstage with him, one Mr. Steve Perry. Not only that, a album to boot. Hmmmmmmm.

There has never been a performance from the Zodiac Cub to American Idol, to the Idol Tour to the many performances he has done since then, "unplugged", "glam", with and without dancers where Adam Lambert hasn't given his all and proved that he is a mega star.

  • carla 2 years ago

This is not the first time Woods has gone after Lambert. I don't know what his problem is, but it's apparent he doesn't like Adam. Maybe Mr Woods should get his panties out of that wad, he's sounding like a shrill.

  • kumulus 2 years ago

Adam "The Voice" Lambert is never not good. I've seen him live at the Idols tour, where everyone went insane for him, and will see him again this summer on his Glam Nation Tour. Cannot wait!!! He is so so special.

  • M & J 2 years ago

Watch the youtube video-notice it starts w a few seconds of performance by another artist-rows and rows of empty seats-then the announcement of Adam Lambert- and the seats filled up and people cheering for Adam. I guess Wood didn't count on our being able to see for ourselves and hear for ourselves-my sympathy for his tin ear and maybe eating a cookie will wake up his brain.

  • fiesty123 2 years ago

Saw the videos and think he is still giving us everything he's got. He, himself, is so excited to be where he is and it totally shows. His talent needs no defending because it has no equal. I think his fans just need to relax and be comfortable with the fact that his glamour style and eccentric approach WILL turn lots of people in the US off (after all many are closed minded in this land) but with that said, for those who get him and appreciate him ..... just enjoy!! Let's let Adam be Adam and sing and let's let his detractors have their opinion.
