'American Idol:' Adam Lambert celebrates 'spring' and 'diversity' -- not Easter

Adam Lambert managed to stir up quite a bit of talk again on Sunday -- even though this time he was speaking honestly and from the heart. Upon receiving a multitude of "Happy Easter" statements via Twitter, the "American Idol" runner-up posted the following message:

"Thanks for the wishes, but I don't celebrate Easter friends. I'm not Christian. :) ... I haven't celebrated Passover in over ten years either. I'm Jew ISH by blood not by practice. I'm not religious. More spiritual. Now u know...

"I DO believe in a higher power...But just b/c I don't celebrate it: I'd like to wish those who do a beautiful Easter or Passover. Hope your day is grand!!"

A short while later (and apparently after a discussion of religious debate) the singer then posted this message:

"Woops. I just opened A very sensitive can of worms. Haha Our diversity is what makes us beautiful. Happy Spring. :)"

Was Adam wrong to share his religious beliefs so publicly? Certain not -- a person has the right to celebrate whatever holiday in whatever way they choose. As a matter of fact, it could be considered kind of Adam to even acknowledge the beliefs of his fans. The only thing that makes him different from many other performers in this situation is that he chose to express his thoughts publicly.

Do you admire Adam Lambert for speaking so candidly about his religious beliefs? Feel free to share your thoughts below and stay tuned for more "American Idol" news.

I was born and raised Catholic, but I'm nonpracticing. I think everyone should have the right to their own beliefs. I admire Adam's honesty and the fact that he wished his fans a beautiful Easter or Passover.

  • Darren 2 years ago

He's stated publically many times his beliefs after being asked in interviews. I don't understand the ignorance of people who felt the need to keep wishing him a Happy Easter. Are people that dumb? He was kind to wish them a Happy Easter. When he stated he didn't celebrate Easter all the fruitcake bible thumpers came out of the woodwork. Damn this country is filled with losers.

Thanks Examiner for always doing fair reporting of Adam (not like some other media websites who always go for the sensationalism aspect of everthing he says.

I feel that Twitter is a place to be honest and open about your views/feelings etc. I think it sucks that whatever he posts seems to always be scrutinized by someone taking things the wrong way or too far into context. Being so open and honest is one of the things that makes Adam so real and great.

@Darren: Love your comment and you're so right. He's honest and being nice wishing people who celebrate a Happy Easter and people attacking him for being honest. I thought we're in a free country here, free to have their own believe or religion.

Yes, I admire Adam alot. He has never covered up his belief systems. Or anything else for that matter. LOL. A very honest person as we all know.

  • karenp 2 years ago

Of course he has the right to share his beliefs!!!! After all everyone is sharing their beliefs with him by wishing him a happy Easter!!!

I agree with Darren and the writer. This happened at christmas too. So many people tweeting Marry Xmas to him. I cant remember if he said anything, but I do recall someone asking him about his fave xmas present or something once. People need to get over themselves. Poor Adam, I knew he was gonna get it for tweeting that. But kudos to him for being brave enough to stand up and say it publicly. Just like those of us are expected to respect people religious beleifs, when we are not religious. Those who are should also repect those of us who are not religious.

Thanks for your reporting. We know Adam Lambert as a honest and open minded person who is kind and charming. He has the right to share his beliefs. After he tweeted, he is not christian I asked myself, didn´t they know that?

As he was on promo tour in Germany they made a picture, he had a chocolate-/easterbunny in his hands. - My first question to the guy who showed me was: Do jews celebrate easter? why are people so ignorant?

  • Carissa 2 years ago

I was raised Christian so i celebrate Easter. But I think its amazing that adam felt comfortable enough to share what he believes with his fans. People shouldn't give him a hard time because of what he believes.

Adam's stating his beliefs. That's such a big deal. People that thought this was some kind of big deal need to get a life. What--you can't state your beliefs? What has this world come to. Adam's honesty is one of the things I most admire about him. I can't stand the all pc bull that people spew today. Stay true to yourself Adam.

  • Susan 2 years ago

I love you Adam Mitchel Lambert! And I love your honesty, you always stay true to yourself! Wow, that is so refreshing for an artist to be like that, so many just are not!!! They ususally state what is PC and not what they believe, Adam on the other hand tells it like it is in the sweetest way possible! What more could we ask for! I adore him!

  • Aylin 2 years ago

    @Kate and @Susan
I agree 100% with both of you and with all of you who get Adam right.
Thats why we love Adam not only as an artist but as such a charismatic person. He is honest and stays true to himself. He won´t let us down.

I feel like Adam.I m not following any church or religion, but I think everybody has to believe whatever helps him through life and makes him happy.
Also believe theres a kind of lead or superior power or call it destiny..for the big picture of my life-but with a lot of room for improvisation and desicions I take myself.
AND-I m celebrating christmas and eastern, but not in his religion way.For me they are familylifehighlights!!

  • Lili 2 years ago

I love Adam's honesty about everything and I'm glad he's sharing it with the world. Not everyone is Christian or religious. I believe exactly as he does - just being spiritual is the best way to be.

Easter, like christmas, has many secular elements to it. I am not religious, but do celebrate these holidays because they were a part of my American cultural tradition. Both holidays have pagan roots, easter is the celebration of spring and life renewed. You can eat a chocolate bunny or dye an easter egg and not be a Christian.

any way good for adam for attempting to educate people

  • Madelaine 2 years ago

I am almost the exact same in my belief, Jewish by birth, not practice and also believe in a higher power and many times people have a hard time understanding that or even if they know I'm not Christian they wish me happy Easter or a Merry Christmas. Thanks for celebrating diversity Adam!

I was on Twitter when Adam came on Sunday, and I couldn't believe that he was responding to our tweets. It was so much fun. He must of had thousands of people tweeting him that morning, yet he tried so hard to make everyone happy. He is just the sweetest guy ever. He is so honest that some people may get offended, but they shouldn't. His honesty is what makes him interesting. He isn't a phony, and thats what I like about him so much, and thats why I find myself wanting to defend him if I read cruel remarks made by ignorant people.
