"American Idol' 2014 got a little less country on April 17 as genre expert Dexter Roberts was sent packing at the close of the top seven results show on FOX. The 22-year old Alabama native is the sixth contestant to be eliminated from the season 13 competition since the live shows began in earnest on Feb. 27.
Although he consistently delivered strong, on-point vocals, Roberts frequently took heat from "AI" judges Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban, and Harry Connick, Jr. for a failure to put his own stamp of originality on his performances. During his tenure on the show, he covered a selection of popular country tunes including the Brett Eldredge ballad "One Mississippi," Little Big Town's "Boondocks," and "Cruise" by Florida Georgia Line. For his April 16 Competitor's Choice round selection, he offered up Luke Bryan's "Muckalee Creek Water."
Narrowly escaping elimination was Slapout, Ala. native Jessica Meuse, who joined Roberts as the second member of the week's bottom two. Meuse took heat from the panelists for her April 16 solo iteration of Miranda Lambert's bitter power anthem "Gunpowder and Lead."
In addition to their panned individual performances, the judges also slammed their trio rendition of the Lady Antebellum release "Compass." Although Connick, Jr. said that Meuse, Roberts, and third group member C.J. Harris sounded fine individually, he was unimpressed with the overall effect of the effort. The judges' negative late-show --the trio performed next-to-last in order-- remarks could very well have dissuaded some voters from supporting any of the three acts.
In addition to Meuse and Harris, four other contestants successfully advanced to the April 23 top six performances show, which will see the hopefuls sing two songs apiece: one country, one rock and roll. Included are Sam Woolf, who earned the judges' sole season save after viewers votes him off on April 3; Jena Irene Asciutto; Caleb Johnson; and Alex Preston.
"American Idol" 2014 resumes April 23 on FOX. The show is scheduled to crown its 13th winner on May 22.
