"American Idol" 2014 premieres in January on FOX, and according to an Aug. 19 Us Weekly report, successful songwriter and record producer Dr. Luke may well wind up completing the revamped judging panel.
Although Black Eyed Peas singer Will.i.am was long-rumored to take a seat at the judges' table alongside confirmed season 13 panelists Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez, the deal allegedly fell through over financial concerns. With contract negotiations at an apparent impasse, producers looked to the talented Dr. Luke, who has helped build the careers of super stars including former "Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry and Kesha, to fill the available spot.
Other industry insiders allegedly previously considered to fill the vacancies left by season 12 judges Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey and Randy Jackson include "AI" alums Jennifer Hudson, Clay Aiken and Adam Lambert. Hudson was considered a near-lock for the panel shortly after the May 23 season finale, with a May 24 E! report claiming that the Oscar winner had already signed a deal to appear. If that agreement ever existed, it's likely that it fell apart with the June 2013 firings of ex-producers Nigel Lythgoe and Ken Warwick.
With or without Dr. Luke aboard, "American Idol" 2014 begins on FOX in January.
