"American Idol" 2014 premieres in January on FOX. After months of media speculation that featured a virtual revolving door of potential candidates, the third and final spot on the brand new three-person judging panel finally went to Harry Connick Jr., according to an Aug. 30 Hollywood Reporter exclusive.
Connick Jr. rounds out a powerhouse panel that also features country music sensation Keith Urban and international super star Jennifer Lopez. Urban is the sole returning member of the disastrous "AI" 2013 panel that saw singers Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey engaged in near-incessant cat fighting from the season's audition phase all the way through the live shows. Lopez served as an "Idol" judge alongside previous show fixture Randy Jackson and rocker Steven Tyler in both 2011 and 2012.
The newly minted trio all but promises a drama-free "Idol" season.
Although season 13 will mark Connick Jr.'s first as a judge, he's not a stranger to the franchise. He served as a mentor to the 2013 edition's top four, offering up common sense advice to Amber Holcomb, Angie Miller, Kree Harrison and eventual winner Candice Glover.
Other celebrity personalities allegedly considered to join Lopez and Urban as a panelist included Grammy Award winner Will.i.am, producer and songwriter Dr. Luke, and "AI" alum turned Oscar winning actress Jennifer Hudson.
