Although the March 13 episode of "American Idol" 2013 featured an array of solid performances by the top 10 finalists, it was Candice Glover who brought the judges to their feet and celebrities to Twitter with her version of a song once crooned by season six "AI" winner Jordin Sparks.
Glover, a 23-year old S.C. native, hit the "Idol" stage looking sleek and sophisticated in a black ensemble. She showed off her beautifully smooth vocals via a stirring rendition of "I Who Have Nothing," and the audience responded with a standing ovation.
Judges Keith Urban, Nicki Minaj, Randy Jackson and Mariah Carey were unanimous in their adoration of the effort. Urban began with "I love you so much" and praised her "effortless" command. Minaj suggested that the song should be forever "banned" from "Idol" because she "destroyed, annihilated" it. She loved how Glover made it her own and called it "refreshing." Jackson called it one of season 12's "greatest" performances to date and termed the effort "perfect." Carey called her "mesmerizing" and said the only reason she didn't stand was that her skirt was too tight.
The panelists weren't alone in their collective sense of awe. Actress and singer Bette Midler tweeted "Beautiful rendition of "I Who Have Nothing" by Candice Glover on @AmericanIdol." Season 11 finalist Joshua Ledet cautioned voters against ignoring Glover's performance with "@CandiceAI12 IF America messes this up! Shame on them! Omg had me in tears!"
