"American Idol" 2013 said good-bye to Tenn. native Paul Jolley at the close of the March 21 results show on FOX. But before the self-proclaimed country/pop artist got the boot, music industry insider and show mentor Jimmy Iovine shared his thoughts on the top nine, and called out one contestant for bending the truth during the March 20 broadcast.
After calling Lazaro Arbos' flat version of The Beatles' hit "In My Life" the "worst performance" of the March 20 live show, Iovine knocked the Naples, Fla. resident for lying about how long he had to prepare. Iovine eschewed Arbos' claim that he had just a day to familiarize himself with the tune, insisting that he actually had five days just like the other eight finalists.
Iovine was also less than impressed by Devin Velez, whose version of "The Long and Winding Road" he termed "middle of the road," and though he praised Angie Miller's talent, he worried over her tendency to be "too dramatic."
But Iovine's comments weren't all of a negative ilk, as a few contestants earned his attention for all the right reasons. He called Candice Glover's "Come Together" the best number of the night "by far" and likened the powerful vocalist to music legends Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. He was also impressed with Amber Holcomb's "She's Leaving Home," and called country crooner Janelle Arthur his "dark horse."
Following the results show broadcast, Arbos wisely ignored Iovine's comments, choosing instead to thank his fans for their support by tweeting "Wow #lazis you're always by my side!! I love you all so much!!!"
The newly established "American Idol" 2013 top eight consists of Arbos, Velez, Miller, Glover, Holcomb, Arthur, Burnell Taylor and Kree Harrison. The show continues March 27 on FOX with Motown week.
