American Idol 2011: Judges & contestants give insight on the competition

The number of American Idol hopefuls is still hovering at eleven for the second week after the save of Casey Abrams last week. Contestants have their work cut out for them. The most important decision for the idols is always song choice.

Paul McDonald said, "You have to pick songs like you're writing a set list for your show. But each week... I want to do a rock song this week and then you do a slow song the next week. You have to keep it entertaining."

Contestants have to keep it entertaining for the voting public and impressive for the judges.

Steve Tyler stated, "I think it's tougher because they have two or three songs that they've learned to sing and they're all 6 [years old]. What are they? They're teenagers and in their 20's. They may have sang 20 songs in their life that is them. And now they're being asked to step out of that circle and sing something else and represent whoever they are."

Jennifer Lopez said, "Every time they get out there, they have to create a great moment on stage that makes the audience go "wow". And that's what's going to keep them here every week. And it's whoever does that. And whoever doesn't make that "wow" is going to be in danger of going home.

With so much at stake, absorbing the advice from the judges, then executing on stage can be a lot tougher than anyone might think.

Pia Toscano said, "You just have to go with whatever you're comfortable doing. My comfort zone is my ballads, but I also love to have fun on stage and I definitely look forward to challenging myself."

Jacob Lusk said, "You have to stop worrying about what people are going to think or what they want to hear and you just have to do what's best for you and what is you because really that's what America wants."

Tune in Wednesday to see your American Idols on FOX television on Wednesday and Thursday nights.
