It was another round of auditions on American Idol tonight, Jan. 23. This time, the show made its way to Atlanta, in Ryan’s home state of Georgia. (He was even joined by his mother, Connie).
Majesty Rose played her guitar and sang Coldplay’s “Violet Hill.” Harry thought it was refreshing to hear her sing in a quiet, elegant way. Jennifer said it was really beautiful and effortless. Keith added that Majesty completely pulled him in, and all three judges put her through to Hollywood.
Jesse Cline also played his guitar while singing Washed By The Water’s “NeedtoBreathe.” Harry Connick, Jr. felt he was a believable singer, and Jennifer loved it. Keith said it was within nanoseconds, and the way he sang and moved his mouth, he was a born singer. It was a golden ticket to Hollywood for Jesse.
Alyson Ragona wore a cat t-shirt and played the ukulele, but the judges agreed it was a “no.”
Chris Medina brought his dog along to the audition, so Harry took the leash and held onto it during Chris’ audition. Harry wondered if he’d ever heard of the song, “I have a plastic bag and a towelette,” which Chris laughed he had not. All three judges said it was a “yes.”
Kristen O’Conner and Emily Piriz were each put through to Hollywood.
Ben Briley has a very country voice and sang “Arms of a Woman.” Jennifer thought it was really good, and Keith loved the sound of his voice. The judges easily agreed on putting Ben through.
Nica Nashae wanted the judges to remember her and sang “You Make Me Feel (Like A Natural Woman).” Keith loved it, said her voice was great, and it was a “yes.” Jennifer and Harry quickly agreed.
Jordan Brisbane believed he had what it takes to shut American Idol down. He sang Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man.” Harry said people would jump to their feet just because of how sweet he is, but he feels he will be a much better singer in 10 years. Jennifer warned him not to do more than what was comfortable with. Keith felt he had the raw talent. All three judges agreed to put him through to Hollywood.
Sam Birchfield made the unique decision to sing a song from The Jungle Book: “I Wanna Be Like You,” as he played his guitar. Jennifer liked what she heard, Keith thought he played the guitar well and he loved his voice, but Harry didn’t buy it. Jennifer said yes, Harry said no, and Keith Urban said yes to put Sam through.
Jessica Meuse performed an original song and played her guitar. Harry thought she seemed low-maintenance and like this was easy. Keith said the way she played guitar was really cool. The judges all said yes and gave Jessica a golden ticket.
It was not good news for Travis Hunter-Brown and many other hopefuls who were sent on their way without golden tickets.
Lauren Ogburn sang Reba McEntire’s “Fancy.” Keith loved it, Jennifer Lopez got goosies, and Harry thought she was trying too hard on her image, but he enjoyed it and thought it was good. It was a yes from all three judges.
Neco Starr and Caleb Johnson were both on Season 11, but did not make it to the live shows. This time around, they both made it back to Hollywood.
Bria Anai sang Adele’s “One and Only.” Keith loved the way she sang, and Jennifer loved the sparkles on her lips. (Only because she could sing, she said). The judges all agreed and put her through to Hollywood.
In total, the judges handed out 44 golden tickets, for a grand total of 163 so far. Next week, the auditions move on to Salt Lake City.
