American Idol is a reality TV show that was created by Simon Fuller in 2002. It was a spin off of Pop Idol, which aired in Great Britain and was created by Simon Cowell. The show's aim is to find new solo pop music acts.
American Idol is shown on Fox and runs from January through late May or early June. It usually airs on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, though during its first weeks, it has been known to have extra shows on Mondays or Thursdays.
Idol is presented by Ryan Seacrest (who was helped by Brian Dunkleman during the first season, though Dunkleman was not invited back for the second), and the judges are Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson, Simon Cowell, and Kara DioGuardi, who began judging during Season 8. Though the judges decide which contestants are put through the initial rounds of the show, their opinions have no real weight once the voting becomes public. How much their opinion is taken into account by voters is debatable.
Despite its declining ratings in the past few years, American Idol is one of the highest rated programs in television history.
