“Rolling Stone" magazine said, “American Idiot” is "a global knockout and a groundbreaking musical event!” The Toledo premiere happens on March 2. Two performances will be given at 3 and 7:30 p.m.
Winner of the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album, “American Idiot” tells a story of three friends looking for hope in a post 9/11 society. Their search for meaning is told through the music of punk rock group Green Day. Billie Joe Armstrong, the lead singer of Green Day, teamed up with Michael Mayer, the director, to create the book. Producer of the show, Tom Hulce, said, “The search of our characters for what to believe in is gorgeously celebrated through Billie Joe and Green Day’s wonderfully lush score.”
Many of the songs in “American Idiot” are easily recognized including the title track which came from Green Day’s 2004 Grammy award winning, multi-platinum CD. Other songs audiences will recognize include the hits “21 guns” and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” which won a Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 2006. Hulce commented, “Audiences have been surprised by the emotional journey the show takes them on, told almost exclusively through Green Day’s songs, including many they are already familiar with and love.”
The show features some adult themes and language. Producers of “American Idiot” recommend only mature audiences attend the performance. Tickets are now on sale, and they start at $28. Online tickets may be purchased at theaterleague.com and stranahantheater.org. The Stranahan box office at 4645 Heatherdowns Boulevard also sells tickets. Tickets may be purchased in person or by phone at 419.385.8851.
