‘American Idiot’ offers student rush tickets

Good news for Green Day fans and those who love musicals in general. Broadway In Detroit is bringing the hit musical “American Idiot” back to the Detroit Opera House at the end of the month, and they just announced that a day-of-performance student rush – for a limited number of orchestra pit seats – will take place daily.

Here’s how it works. Two hours prior to show time, anyone with a valid student ID can purchase orchestra pit tickets at the Detroit Opera House box office at the reduced $29 price – cash only. This offer is available only in-person at the box office with a limit of two tickets per person. We think it’s a great way to let cash-constrained students see a really fun show in an awesome venue.

American Idiot” last visited Detroit in the winter of 2012 and heated things up pretty quickly. This 2010 Tony Award-nominated Best Musical and 2010 Grammy Award winner for Best Musical Show Album features the music of Green Day with the lyrics of its lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong. The book is by Armstrong and Michael Mayer and direction is byTony Award®-winner Mayer ("Spring Awakening").

“American Idiot” is the story of three boyhood friends, each searching for meaning in a post 9-11 world. Their journey is revealed through live performances of such hits as "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," "21 Guns," "Wake Me Up When September Ends," "Holiday" and the blockbuster title track "American Idiot," from Green Day's 2004 multi-platinum album. Also included in the score are several songs from Green Day's 2009 release "21st Century Breakdown," and an unreleased love song, "When It's Time."

"Since its inception, audiences have been surprised by the emotional journey the show takes them on, told almost exclusively through Green Day's songs, including many they are already familiar with and love," said Tom Hulce, producer. "This is such a potent time for our country and the search of our characters for what to believe in is gorgeously celebrated through Billie Joe and Green Day's wonderfully lush score," he added.

“American Idiot appears January 31 - February 2, 2014 at the Detroit Opera House, located at 1526 Broadway St., in Detroit. Performance times are: Friday, January 31 at 8:00 p.m., Saturday, February 1 at 2:00 p.m.and 8:00 p.m., and Sunday, February 2 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Tickets range from $34 - $69 (except, of course, for those student rush tickets at $29) and are on sale at all Ticketmaster locations, by phone at 1-800-982-2787, online and in person at the Detroit Opera House and Fisher Theatre Box Offices. A limited number of premium seats are available through Ticketmaster and at the box office. For group sales (10 or more) email groups@broadwayindetroit.com or call (313) 871-1132.
