“American Hustle” wins big at SAG Awards, the rest is mixed

The 2013 SAG Awards were held last night and the winners were very close to the ones we saw the prior week at the Golden Globes. In fact, there were quite a few similarities between the two.

First, the SAG Awards are held by the actor’s union the Screen Actors Guild, along with AFTRA, or the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. That means that they recognize film and television achievements, much like the Globes. However, at the SAG Awards, the ensembles win, so rather than “Best Picture” you get “Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.” There are no Best Director, Writer or music awards. It’s all about the actors and there are many who feel that this award is very much an honor since the winners are determined by their peers.

Second, the awards have a loose feel, much like the Globes. The casts sit together at tables and there is food and some sort of beverages (whether or not they are alcoholic, I don’t know). This usually means that the SAG Awards are more of a party and less of a formal thing.

The main difference between the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards, at least this year, was that the winners did not have to walk incredibly far to get up on stage and collect their prizes. Also, the winners were allowed to talk a little bit longer than at the Globes.

One of the highlights was the Life Achievement Award which was given to actress Rita Moreno. Moreno was fantastic, dancing on stage with friend (and fellow Electric Company star) Morgan Freeman. She also flirted with Jeremy Renner and Brad Pitt, before launching into a lovely song and thanking everyone for her long, fantastic, and awards-rich career. At 82, she also looked like she could still dance in West Side Story if need be.

The one main difference in the awards came in the Supporting Actress award (here called Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role) which was won at the Globes by Jennifer Lawrence, but won here by Lupita Nyong’o for 12 Years a Slave.

Here are the rest of the winners at this year’s SAG Awards:

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role:

Matthew McConaughey - Dallas Buyers Club

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role:

Cate Blanchett - Blue Jasmine

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role:

Jared Leto - Dallas Buyers Club

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture:

American Hustle
