'American Hustle,' 'The Wolf of Wall Street' lead 2014 MTV Movie Award nominees

With eight nominations each, "American Hustle" and "The Wolf of Wall Street" are the leading contenders for the 23rd Annual MTV Movie Awards, which will take place at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on April 13, 2014. MTV announced the nominations for the awards show on March 6, 2014. Conan O'Brien is hosting the ceremony. MTV will televise the awards show at 9 p.m. EDT/PDT. Voting is done by the public on MTV's website.

"American Hustle" (a dramedy inspired by the real-life ABSCAM political scandal) and "The Wolf of Wall Street" (a dark comedy inspired by the memoir of real-life stock swindler Jordan Belfort) are both up for the top prize of Movie of the Year. "American Hustle" and "The Wolf of Wall Street" received several Oscar nominations, but ultimately neither film won any Oscars.

Following close behind with seven MTV Movie Award nominations is the blockbuster sequel "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire." The raunchy comedy "We're the Millers" received six MTV Movie Award nominations. "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" and "We're the Millers" didn't get any Oscar nominations.

Of course, the MTV Movie Awards have very different voters than those for the Academy Awards. Fantasy films, superhero movies and comedies tend to dominate the winners' list at the MTV Movie Awards.

Almost all of the nominated films are or will be available on VOD, DVD, Blu-ray and digital download by the time the 2014 MTV Movie Awards ceremony takes place.
