After last week's stellar premiere of "American Horror Story: Coven," it's only natural that things got a little exposition heavy in last night's "Boy Parts," the second episode of the season. Though it was light on action, there were still plenty of highlights to fill the hour. Here, in no particular order, are the top five moments.
You've Just Been Witch-Slapped
Having Kathy Bates and Jessica Lange in a scene-together is gold; but put Lange with Angela Bassett and you set that gold on fire. Their confrontation was the epitome of intense, and both actresses sold it with a ferocious intensity that melted the screen. Plus, it was all done with pure words and nothing else.
Where Did You Come From
Last season, Lily Rabe was the MVP of "Asylum," and its good to see her character come back to life (so to speak) on "Coven." Misty May might love all of God's creatures, but that doesn't mean she's a gentle soul, as those hunters soon found out rather quickly. Her scenes with Zoe (Taissa Farmiga) were also nicely done, especially Misty's thoughts on Stevie Nicks.
It's a Brand New World
Only Kathy Bates could make a monster such as Madame Delphine LaLaurie seem sympathetic. Her bewilderment at her house being turned into a museum along with her sadness at the death of her family added a new dimension to a character that could have easily been a one-note caricature.
Do You Want Fries with That
Though brief, the scene which revealed some of Queenie's (Gabourey Sidibe) was quite gruesome, but still rather effective as a shock. Plus, it revealed a connection to Marie Laveau, which could provide some juicy action later this season.
I'm Just a Mean Witch
Though the Franken-boyfriend storyline appears to be the weakest of the bunch, the one thing it has going for it is the performance of Emma Roberts as Madison. Her quips are almost (though not quite there) on par with the veteran actresses, and she's got that mean girl, spoiled persona nailed down to perfection.
So Cordelia and her husband want a baby, but how bad? Though we can probably foreshadow that Cordelia (Sarah Paulson) will have something a little evil inside of her, that sex scene with her husband was oddly erotic in a very creepy way.
"I loved my girls, in my own way. Even the ugly one. The moment she came out of my belly she was a shame to me. She had the face of a damn hippo. But I loved her, just the same." - Madame Delphine
