And so the nationwide contest to determine what exactly "American Hijab" is according to Muslim American interpretation goes on.
The American Hijab Design Contest was announced back in December and has recently extended its submission deadline to February 28th and has added a new component to the original judging criteria.
AHDC says of the matter on their webpage:
Due to the overwhelming response from fashionistas, we will also have a simultaneous American Hijab Style Contest. The Style Contest is for non-designers to present their American hijab outfits.
Judging the contest submissions are America's Next Top Model Judge Derek Khan and Grammy award-winner & Kanye West collaborator Rhymefest among others. The panel will be sure to discuss and ascertain How to Make the Hijab Hip.
Spearheading the concept and contest is Muslim attorney Shaz Kaiseruddin. Kaiseruddin hopes to battle the discrimination that Muslim women face in America by helping make images of hijab fashion more commonplace and familiar.
And all the while, she hopes to "encourage the mainstream fashion world to pay greater attention to this $96 billion+ market. Many Americans, Muslim or not, are seeking options other than the usual short and tight, and the fashion world would benefit from keeping up. Covered chic is the new avant-garde."
