American Garden Award

First of all what is the American Garden Award? It is a competition where the gardening public has an opportunity to vote on a specific flower they think has the most appealing garden characteristics. In fact, some of the world's most prestigious flower breeders choose their best varieties into this competition.

Visitors to Cantigny Gardens this summer may have voted for their favorite new flower. Twenty-eight participating gardens plant and display these annuals for the public to vote on their favorite using one of several voting methods.

The votes are in and the three winners are:

Grand Prize: Begonia boliviensis Santa Cruz™ ‘Sunset' features tons of cascading scarlet/orange blooms that spill out from baskets and containers. It is surprisingly weather tolerant, putting up with heat, drought and rain. It is also a reliable performer in both sun and shade.

Second Place goes to Gazania ‘Big Kiss™ White Flame' F1 from Syngenta Flowers. It has huge white and rose striped flowers on full, bushy plants. Thriving in full sun, here is another heat and drought tolerant annual for the garden. Use this plant for high impact displays in garden beds or containers.

Petunia Surfinia® ‘Deep Red' (Suntory Flowers) takes home Third Place. The truly deep red color on this petunia is stunning. Surfinia® ‘Deep Red’ offers superior garden performance with no pinching or pruning needed.

Look for these winning varieties as seeds or plants at your local garden center or online supplier this spring. Find out more information about the American Garden Award here.
