American distribution rights for 'The Europa Report' for release in late 2013

A Feb. 5, 2013 story in Coming Soon reports that the American distribution rights to “The Europa Report,” a space adventure depicting an expedition to the moon of Jupiter, has been acquired by Wagner/Cuban Company's Magnet Releasing, the genre subsidiary of Magnolia Pictures. This means that the movie will be released in the United States later in 2013.

According to IMDB, “The Europa Report” stars Sharlto Copley, best known to American audiences for his appearance in the South Africa science fiction film, “District Nine.”

“The Europa Report” was developed with the aid of NASA and SpaceX, the latter a commercial space firm to ensure as much authenticity as possible.

The movie depicts a private expedition to Europa, a moon of Jupiter covered with a layer of ice that scientists believe has a planet girdling ocean in which life might exist. Europa was heavily studied by a number of NASA space probes, most recently the Galileo which orbited Jupiter for a number of years until it was plunged into Jupiter’s atmosphere on Sept 21, 2003.

Europa was featured in a previous science fiction film, “2010: Odyssey Two” based on the best selling novel by Arthur C. Clarke.
