Prior to 2006, the Brewers Association celebrated American Beer Month in July. In 2006, the association decided to condense the celebration into one week, and spread the news. US Congress, in 2006, passed House Resolution 753, which supported and recognized National Craft Breweries. May 16-22, 2011 is ACBW, or American Craft Beer Week.
Today, there are over 1,700 craft breweries across the states, and account for over 100,000 jobs. In 2009, the overall beer market was down in revenue. Craft beer was up twelve percent, and the market grew over ten percent.
All across the nation, this week, people are celebrating craft beers. Let's take a look at what events are taking place here, in the Arena District:
May 18th
- Gordon Biersch is hosting a Tapping Party, unveiling a new beer. Gordon Biersch brews all beers served on the menu, with an array of award-winners. Tonight, at 5:30 pm, be there for the tapping of Cascade Alt!
- Elevator Brewing Company is hosting Maters of Beer Appreciation and Professors of Hearty Drinking! For a $10 cover at the door, enjoy the festivites, cook-out, and a tour of the brewery.
May 19th
- Evelator Brewing Company is hosting Homebrewer's Night from 7-8pm, where guests can try samples of the brewery's craft beer selection.
May 20th
- Elevator Brewing Company is hosting the 2nd annual Bark & Brew Fundraiser from 6-7 pm. For $20, patrons will receive a tour of the brewery, and a t-shirt. All proceeds go to the Columbus Downtown Dog Park Association.
For the grand finale of ACBW, head over to the 2nd annual Columbus Beerfest!
Being held in the Short North this weekend, May 21-22nd, patrons can expect live music, entertainment, and the main event: beer. For $40, fest-goers will receive 25 tickets, each good for an 8 oz. sample of the over 175 available beers, and a 5-oz. souvenir glass. Designated drivers can obtain tickets for $10, and still be able to enjoy the entertainment at the fest. The doors open at 6:00 pm Friday and Saturday, with last-call at 10:45 pm.
Craft Beer Recommendations:
From Elevator: Bleeding Buckeye. Hands-down a favorite locally brewed craft beer. Go Buckeyes!
From Gordon Biersch: Blonde Bock. An extraordinary mix of flavors, is both bold and strong.
Try a new beer at Gordon Biersch, take a tour of Elevator, and enjoy the music and beer at the Beerfest. Just make sure to -as always- drink responsibly. Take the time to give back to the crafters at your local breweries. With the weather not being the greatest in Columbus this week, there are plenty of reasons to head down to the AD!
