American Civil War and romance

I

Joining us today are writers from the American Civil War: Beyond Scarlett and Rhett group telling us why they write in the civil war era.

Donna Dalton:

Born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, I'm surrounded by memorials of the American Civil War.  From the battlefields to the museums, to the bronze monuments lining Monument Avenue. Many of my ancestors fought in the War. Schools hammered the history into us. Most people say, write what you know. Well I know the Civil War, and I admire the brave men and women who lived and died during such a tumultuous time in our history.

Anna Kathryn Lanier:

So far, my stories take place after the war and my characters are dealing with the aftermath of the war: the scars that are left from the pain, physical and emotional, that were inflicted because of the war. Because it was Americans fighting Americans, I think the turmoil of the war was worse than for other wars. The reasons for fighting, on both sides, was more personal and you can draw from that turmoil for your characters' own angst.

Susan Macatee:

I write Civil War romance because of my husband's interest in the Civil War period, which led to both of us becoming Civil War reenactors. After learning so much about the period for reenacting, I decided it would make an excellent setting for great romances and I already knew so many details, research would be a breeze.

The American Civil War: Beyond Scarlett and Rhett is an online group of romance authors who discuss books and all things Civil War,  the romance, the reality, the facts and fiction.
