A few months back, American Aquarium set up shop at Smiths Olde Bar (SOB) and proceeded to anchor what was one of the best damn shows Atlanta had witnessed in 2012. Fast forward a few months and BAM, here they are again. This Saturday night SOB will once again host the Raleigh band, and local favorites The Higher Choir will be there too.
American Aquarium (AA) is known for dishing out rowdy rock tunes infused with the right amount of twang and Southern imagery. With multiple albums to choose from, their set list should be a conglomeration of all the tunes AA’s devout fans know and love. There will be plenty from the newest record like “Cape Fear River”, “Abe Lincoln” and “Lonely Ain’t Easy” but don’t worry I am sure “Louisiana Beauty Queen” and “Coffee & Cigarettes” will most likely make it into the evening selection of songs. These guys know what it takes to please a crowd but when you have music as good as theirs it becomes a whole lot easier.
Sharing the semi-circular stage at SOB is The Higher Choir, and if you haven’t seen them live you need to. With one EP under their belts and another on the way, their set list will be full of tunes that deliver their fresh Southern music that they do so well. On the stage is where the Choir thrives with blistering guitars, chunky rhythms and primal vocals, their shows start wide open and never slow down. Look for great songs like “Who’s To Say” and “Hard Tack & Whiskey” as well as some new material, either way it will be impossible to stand still when they jam. AA better bring their best because The Higher Choir will set the bar high.
Be sure to get there early so you don’t miss out on the opening band Parker Smith and the Bandwith. Their take on Southern rock is infecting music listeners all over the South. This is a band you need to experience live.
Three great bands in one of the best venues in Atlanta is a no brainer. This is the place to be this Saturday night. Treat your ears to the sweet tunes of American Aquarium and throw your support to local favorites The Higher Choir & Parker Smith and the Bandwith. Come grab some grub, a cold beer and settle in for some damn fine music. If you see me there, which I will be, feel free to say hi.
