Yesterday it was announced unofficially by the United States government that some of the aid to Egypt was being suspended due to the ongoing violence.
The American government sends according to Propublica, a public interest website, approximately $2 billion dollars a year in aid to Egypt, which is more than any other country except for Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq or Israel.
According to CNN, the Obama administration has decided to temporarily withhold some of the aid that the American government sends to the Egyptian government. Its website reported that:
“The Obama administration is withholding some military aid to Egypt as it reviews how it wants to proceed, a U.S. official told CNN, but a Pentagon spokesman said he knew of no action to stop aid to Egypt.”
Fox News reported that the portion of Egyptian aid suspended by the Obama administration is the aid portion dedicated to the Egyptian armed forces.
Even though it is being reported by various news agencies that the American government is cutting aid to Egypt, the government is officially denying this. A spokesman at the White House has stated that the news that the government is cutting off some aid to Egypt is false.
The Associated Press reported that the White House will hold a cabinet meeting today to discuss the status of Egyptian aid.
