American abortion rates hit 40 year low

According to an article published on February 2, 2014 in the Washington Post, the abortion rate in America has dropped to an all-time low. Data from a 2011 Guttmacher Institute study, the last year that figures were made available, show that 16.9 abortions were performed for every 1,000 women in the country. The only year where that figure was lower was in 1973, when abortions became legal in all fifty states. The statistics back then were 16.3 performed for every 1,000 women.

While the specific cause in the trend was not studied, many believe that long acting birth control options, such as IUD's, and the economic decline have been major contributing factors. Pro-life groups are claiming that anti-abortion measures have had an impact on the number of procedures performed, as well, but most of those restrictions did not take effect until after 2011. However, these more stringent laws will likely have an impact as the nation moves forward, as the they have made access to safe, legal procedures more difficult for many women in the nation.
