Club America began the Apertura 2014 with an impressive 2-1 victory over last season’s champion, Leon FC at the Camp Nou. This is the second tournament in a row where America starts the season off with a victory. The eagles have started the season on the right foot since the Apertura 2012.
Both teams kicked off with their world cup participant players. America had Miguel Layun and Paul Aguilar on the field. Leon fielded Carlos “Gulit” Peña, Jose Juan Vasquez, and Rafael Marquez. The only player who did not see game time was Raul Jimenez. All this, just one week after the Brazil 2014 FIFA World Cup came to close last week.
The game was hard fought with many fouls coming from both sides. America received five yellow cards, while the home side had three bookings. However, no players were sent off with a red card.
America opted for holding back on the clearance from Leon goalkeeper William Yarbrough and applying pressure at that point. Osvaldo Martinez took advantage of a loose ball in the area in the 13th and was able to push it into the net for the 1-0.
Another error from Yarbrough gave up the second goal in the 37th. On a free kick, Yarbrough dove but entered the net with the ball for the 2-0 in the visiting team’s favor. Oribe Peralta made his debut with America and was a key player when it came to pressuring the Leon defense.
Leon had the chance to make a comeback when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 83rd minute. Mauro Boselli took the shot from the spot, but goalkeeper Moises Muñoz was there to keep the ball from entering the net. Boselli was given a second shot at closing the gap one minute later. This time Boselli did not miss and put the ball in the net for the final 2-1.
Club America will host Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente at the Azteca Stadium in week 2. Leon will travel to Monterrey to take on Tigres UANL.
