This week on "America's Next Top Model," the sixteen finalists that made it to the house will face their first challenge, and we'll have our first elimination.
We left last week as the models anticipated walking in a Guess runway show that would start at the top of a building, and consist of them walking down the side, strapped in harnesses, as they ended at ground level. Don admitted to being extremely scared of heights. How would he be able to handle walking over the edge of a building? Read on.
Backstage, the guys and girls are getting their makeup done and getting dressed. BryanBoy and Kelly are mingling with everyone, trying to get an idea of who looks like they've got it, and who maybe looks weak.
Kelly asks Renee who she feels is her biggest competition is, and she replies that she feels Jourdan is the strongest. Kelly asks Marvin whom he would like to get together with in the house, and he replied that he liked Bianca. When Kelly and BryanBoy asked Bianca whom she would like to get together with, she replied that she liked Mike. Sorry Marvin! Mike mentions in the confessional that he's attracted to Bianca. Hmmm.
When Kelly talks to Chlea, asking her if she is ready to go down the wall, she replies, "Of course!" Then, she mentions that she doesn't hear good things about Kelly, saying she hears that she is mean, and maybe she should change the way she says things. Kelly tells her that she isn't there to ask her for advice. Boy, Chlea has guts!
As the time nears for the runway show, Rob has everyone gather around, where he tells the models that tonight's runway show will be judged by former Guess model, Jessica Hart. She says she's really looking forward to it. Rob also says that the winner of tonight's challenge will win the key to the Tyra suite, and the Guess closet, and he wishes everyone luck.
Just as the runway is about to begin, it starts pouring down rain… just to add another element to the challenge. Casey Adams, the stunt coordinator, talks to the models about how to start the runway show, saying to lean forward until they are flat. Everyone is still looking pretty scared.
Chris S. and Nina are first to go, and Nina has a hard time learning forward. She falls back to the rooftop, but eventually starts down the wall. At the bottom, the models then continue on a conventional runway and pose at the end, then leave.
Most of the guys and girls had similar problems adjusting to walking at an angle that we were not made to walk at. The guys have an easier time of it, being in flat shoes, as compared to the girls in heels. Cory does exceptionally well, pulling on the collar of his jacket. Chris H. looks like a zombie with his arms out in front of him. But the absolute worst walk has to be Mike, who looked like Frankenstein. Bianca has a horrible time standing, and she just gives up, and just poses as she is vertically lowered on the wires, and Marvin is just killing it.
In the end, Marvin is the best for the guys, and Renee is the best for the girls. The winner is Renee, who chooses Kanani to share the Tyra suite with her.
It's time for the first TyraMail, and the still shot of Tyra wearing a mail uniform has her hair blowing in the breeze. The mail says:
"To make it to the TOP is a Life Long COMMITMENT, Fierce and Love, Tyra"
The next day, the buses bring everyone to a studio, where they meet Tyra and Johnny for their photo shoot. Tyra tells them that she is proud of their commitment to the crazy runway the previous night, and asks if everyone is committed to getting married today. This, of course, freaks out Jourdan, who again says, "I got married at 18 and divorced at 18" and she is having some bad flashbacks.
Tyra assures everyone is isn't legally. Johnny says they will be posing together to create alternative wedding editorials. Tyra continues, asking if everyone noticed her hair moving in the TyraMail, and says that is called a "Flixel," and they will be using that technology on all the photoshoots bringing their photos alive. She also says that this season she will be doing everyone's makeup, with help, and it's time to get started.
The first wedding scene is Jourdan and Jeremy, and their theme is "Nudist wedding." The photographer today is Douglas Friedman.
Johnny tells Jourdan and Jeremy that they will be emoting from their face, and in front of them is long grass, which will be moving with the Flixel technology in the photo. Jeremy is worried that he doesn't know how to pose, since he's a virgin, and Jourdan is having bad wedding memories and she's very stiff in their shoot. In the end things improve some, but it's still iffy as to if they got a good shoot.
Alexandra and Mike have the second shoot, which is a "Shotgun wedding." She's very pregnant, and pushing a baby stroller, (which is the motion in the shot) plus they have a couple of kids as extras. Alex seems to do very well, but Mike is very stiff.
Kanani and Jiana have a "Same sex" marriage. Kanani has the wedding gown on, while Jiana is wearing a black fitted pantsuit with a white blouse, and super smoky eyes. She's really looking hot with that makeup, and upstaging Kanani. They have a young girl tossing rose petals in front of them, which is the motion in the shot.
The next shoot is Cory and Chlea, who are doing a "Motorcycle wedding." Both of them are tattooed up and Cory is riding on the back of the bike. He seems to have a hard time giving masculine, however. The motion element is the smoke coming out of the tailpipe.
Don and Chris H. have the "Gay wedding," with Cory as an extra playing Don's father off to the side. Chris H. really gets into his role, even though both he and Don are straight, he really does a great job, and Don as well looks proud to be with him. Cory is shaking his finger at the boys off to the side for the motion element.
Poor Phil doesn't get to marry a person. Instead, he has "Objectophilia," and marries his TV remote. The motion in the shot is the movement on the TV screen. Phil does ok, but not great.
The next wedding theme is "Group wedding," with Marvin, Nina and Bianca getting married. They will stand together with Jourdan, Alex and Jiana sitting in the foreground, swaying side to side in unison, which is the motion part of the photo.
Marvin is psyched to be surrounded by so many girls. Marvin looks great in the middle, but Nina and Bianca look rather blah.
Chris S. and Nina are doing a "Hip-Hop Mixed Race wedding." Chris is dressed in white with a baseball cap and a gold grill and tons of gold chains around his neck, while Nina is prim and proper in a wedding gown beside him. On either side of them are Kanani, Mike and Jeremy as extras tossing money in the air, which is the motion part of the photo. Chris has some problems, as he's the shortest guy of the bunch, so he looks kind of wimpy, and Johnny has to tell him to butch it up.
That's a wrap, so the models all head back to the house, where they are greeted by the skull elimination mail. Usually, it says something about them meeting with the judges, and only (insert number here) will continue on to become America's Next Top Model. However, this elimination mail says:
"Tomorrow you will meet with the judges. NO ONE is safe."
Oooh.. double elimination? We shall see.
At judging, everyone stands on the platform, and Tyra introduces the judges; Kelly Cutrone, Rob Evans and BryanBoy. And like last cycle, the fourth judge is the fans, whose votes will count as part of the score that determines who will go home.
Tyra reads off the prizes: a fashion spread in Nylon magazine, a contract with Next Models, and a $100,000 national ad campaign with Guess.
The critiques went as follows, Judges scores are listed from left to right - Kelly, Tyra, Rob.
Alex and Mike: They have the shotgun wedding. The judges love Alex, and think she's really working it, but Mike… not so much. They think he isn't connecting with Alex or the kids who are extras.
Alex: 7, 8, 7
Mike: 6, 7, 7
Renee and Chris S. They have the mixed race, hip-hop wedding. Kelly thinks Chris looks like a lesbian, and Tyra doesn't like the hip pop pose he is giving. The judges don't think that she looks like a debutante. They think she looks hoochie.
Chris S: 6, 6, 5
Renee: 5, 6, 7
Kanani and Jiana. They have the lesbian wedding. The judges think that Kanani looks like she doesn't want to be there. Rob loves the way her body looks in the shot, and he thinks she has a really strong jawline that could be really good for editorial shots. Tyra thinks she looks sexy.
Kanani: 5, 7, 7
Jiana: 7, 8, 9
Cory and Chlea. They have the motorcycle wedding. The judges think that Cory needs to work on his straight guy look, because they weren't sure if he was playing a girl or a guy. Tyra loves his smize, though. As for Chlea, Kelly brings up her rudeness at the shoot. (You KNEW that was coming, didn't you?) She thinks that Chlea looks busted. She looks like an older woman with a younger lesbian on the back of the bike.
Cory: 7, 8, 6
Chlea: 4, 7, 8
Phil. He has the objectophilia wedding. The judges think he didn't show enough emotion towards the remote. Rob thinks he should have looked at the remote like he would look at a girl.
Phil: 5, 6, 7
Chris H and Don. They have the gay wedding. The judges thought Chris really killed the shot. Rob said, "If I didn't know better, I would think you were gay." Kelly thinks that Don is also rocking the shot. She sees a lot of power radiating from him.
Chris H,: 8, 9, 10
Don: 8, 9, 9
Jeremy and Jourdan. They have the nudist wedding. Kelly likes Jeremy's body, but Rob says that although Jeremy has one of the best bodies in the house, he's not really working it. Kelly says that Jourdan is relying too much on being pretty, and that's not enough.
Jeremy: 8, 6, 5
Jourdan: 7, 5, 6
Nina, Marvin and Bianca. They have the group wedding. Kelly thinks that Nina looks like an 80-year-old Russian woman in a babushka. BryanBoy disagrees, saying he loves her. Tyra says that Nina's best pose is to the side, not straight on, as she is posed in this shot. Kelly is disappointed in Bianca's shot. She says she's one of her favorites, and she's sad that this is the photo that she has to judge. Rob says that Bianca looks better in person than she does in a photo, which is not a good thing for a model. The judges totally loved Marvin. Rob says he killed it.
Nina: 5, 7, 6
Marvin: 9, 9, 10
Bianca: 6, 5, 7
It's time to announce the results. The callouts went as follows:
- Chris H.
Bianca and Chris S. are both going home this week.
Next week is sure to be filled with drama, as it's makeover week! Tune in on Aug. 19 at 9:00 p.m. on The CW for the next episode.
