We are live ... and Nick Cannon's microphone isn't working! That was fixed quick, and now we are back on "America's Got Talent".
Following that bit of strangeness at the beginning, the rest of the show went as planned. The talent level was a bit disappointing across the board, but there were a few highlights.
Kung Fu Heroes: This group was designed to show off some dangerous moves, but at the end of the day it is tough to see if these acts will actually entertain in a Las Vegas show. Thankfully, this may be the best karate act the show has ever seen. The music was electric, and it was really a bunch fun. (Don't really agree with the judges here.)
Christina & Ali: We know these sisters have a great story (fighting cystic fibrosis). but they really don't have the voices for this competition. It pains me to say it since the show did the right thing in giving them this chance, but they are not an act people would pay to see.
Airpocalypse: Instead of hating on them as is generally the case here, let's instead look at it from a talent perspective. The gang shouldn't have brought the girls on board -- it was a distraction. Everyone there seemed to have a good time, but it was tough to watch on this end.
The Hot Shot Tap Dancers: Is it easy to love tap dance? Not always, especially since most of these routines on "AGT" are just run-of-the-mill. Thankfully, this gang made me believers by mixing it up. (However, it's hard to believe their claim that the music is not "current".)
Paul Safy, Jr.: Paul's voice is incredible -- like Sinatra for a new generation. The only real problem with the performance was that the arrangement was a little bit loud. Also, he has to trim the hair a little bit since he looks a little too much like Alcide from "True Blood".
Future Funk: These two kids are amazing dancers -- way better than anyone would even imagine considering their age. Usually the kid acts are all overplayed because of their age, but these guys are worth watching. Were they perfect? Far from it, but there's a good shot they will make it through.
Sally Cohn: Sally the hand-whistler probably shouldn't be on the show at this point -- no matter how much the judges may be trying to convince me otherwise, it's just not that fun to watch. The judges love her, and it's hard to really see why.
Nick Pyke: The problem with Nick isn't that he lacks the talent for this -- it's that his attitude stinks. He needs to be a bit more humble, and realize that he has to mix it up. As great as it was to watch someone juggle fire, it's something we've seen before.
RNG: This is not the sort of dance group you expect from kids -- they are technical, solid, and even cool. They also remind me of the young Jabbawockeez. This performance wasn't my favorite by the group, but it had a cool nightmare theme to it.
Maricar: Once again, the judges love the act that is just strange to everyone else. After spending 90 seconds waiting for the big payoff, all that ultimately happened was that she painted a picture of Piers underwater. Impressive? Yes, but not exactly earth-shattering.
Fighting Gravity: This group was astounding the first time around, so would the "dancers in darkness" live up to the hype? They did! This is easily the coolest act of the night, and something worth a ticket to Vegas any day.
Nathaniel Kenyon: The show gave the coveted "final spot" to a guy with Justin Bieber hair and a voice on par with Tim Urban from "American Idol" -- Nathaniel is okay, but he's nothing special. Paul has the better voice, even if Nathaniel is a better performer. Kenyon is the more likely of the two to advance simply because of his audience.
