It was announced before the results that the wild card round is no more and that the four judges would each be allowed to select one act that would automatically become a semifinalist.
Yes, because letting the judges have an automatic vote has never been a mistake in the past, right?
I'm kidding, of course. In fact, the producers should already be deeply regretting this decision, as it has once again resulted in one of the judges taking the metaphorical equivalent of a diarrhea dump all over the credibility of America's Got Talent.
Yes, that's right ladies and gentlemen. Tone the Chiefrocca is officially a semifinalist.
And no, it wasn't Howie Mandel that dropped his pants and crapped all over Radio City Music Hall. It was Mel B.
After this result, Howard Stern called out Howie Mandel for having previously pleaded for America to just give the million to Kenichi Ebina, a statement which Mandel refused to take responsibility for.
The surprise was that America did wind up voting heavily in favor of one over the other, and it became pretty well apparent why. D'Angelo, the semifinalist said of his success that "I kind of feel terrible" for having defeated Ruby, who was crying before the results were even announced and refused to leave the stage after they had been revealed.
D'Angelo had the edge by being the pair that actually earned their spot in the Top 60 to begin with, and sealed the deal by being classy in contrast to the smart-mouthed camera glutton.
And it should be said at this point that one of the guest performers for this results show was Tom Cotter, whose stand-up inexplicably managed to get even more generic and humorless than it had been last year (seriously, did he think nobody would notice he was ripping it from George Carlin?).
How must it have felt to watch him get announced as last year's runner-up only to require a judges' vote for him to be a semifinalist?
Heidi Klum voted first for Duo Resonance, but was subsequently overruled by the other three judges voting for John Wing. Klum, however, asked to announce her wild card pick right there and chose Duo Resonance, allowing both of them to advance into the semifinals.
It was at this point that Cannon asked Mel B. if she wanted to make her pick as well, resulting in the aforementioned dump all over AGT's credibility.
If Howie Mandel and Howard Stern have made their selections already, they were not revealed.
