Should I vote for Obama, or the lesser of two evils? Should I picket Planned Parenthood, or leave that to somebody else? Should I use contraception, or listen to Christ's Church? Should I make my voice heard in any way I can because my Catholic/Christian faith is under siege by a government mandate, or should I shrink like a lukewarm violet? Should I dare to live like a Eucharistic Catholic, a gospel motivated Christian, or should I become like the herd, chewing the grass of pop culture, like a dried up leaf--blowing in the wind of passing ideologies?
"As David was approaching Bahurim,
a man named Shimei, the son of Gera
of the same clan as Saul’s family,
was coming out of the place, cursing as he came.
He threw stones at David and at all the king’s officers,
even though all the soldiers, including the royal guard,
were on David’s right and on his left.
Shimei was saying as he cursed:
'Away, away, you murderous and wicked man!'" 2 Samuel 15:13-14, 30; 16:5-13
The Catholic, and the Christian, man and woman (though Catholic is Christian!) is not immune to the consequences of being human. They are, moreover, while in pursuit of holiness, in the grace of God, which flows for the Catholic, par excellence, in the Eucharistic Life, and for the non-Catholic-Christian, in conformity with the gospel, also not immune to the consequences of being human. For, besides temptation to sin, they suffer persecution, undeservedly, for simply being a disciple of Jesus--and they suffer persecution, deservedly, for sinning, and being a scandal to the faithful.
Remember, however, that Jesus was the only One who didn't raise a stone to the woman caught in adultery. Remember, moreover, that Jesus is the only One who can forgive our sins.
Therefore, Jesus Christ, alone, is our reward for our faithfulness.
"O LORD, how many are my adversaries!
Many rise up against me!
Many are saying of me,
'There is no salvation for him in God.'" Psalm 3:2-7
When are we going to wake up and realize that we live in a godless society, built upon a lifeless humanist secularism? When are we going to realize that a growing 'legion' believes that God is dead, and that the progressive post-Christian era has begun? When are we going to realize that they are partly right--for all too many American's live as if God were really dead?
When will we realize that our faith is an affront to them?
"He asked him, 'What is your name?'
He replied, 'Legion is my name. There are many of us.'” Mark 5:1-20
In the end, all that counts is Jesus, and our free will. We can choose Jesus, in the Eucharist--in the gospel, or we can choose the 'Legion' of demonic titillations in our popular, fading society. We can choose the Cross of Christ, giving ourself in Love, and Truth, for our family, our friends, and our society--or we can live selfishly, competitively, choosing to use people when we benefit from them personally, living only to scratch an itch, or please a bodily need.
In the end, America's future rests on the choice between Jesus or the devil.
