The America's Cup trophy is coming to Newport and will be on display on Thursday, July 1 for all to see.

You can view the trophy at Bannister's Wharf and then it will be moved to Fort Adams State Park.

Rhode Islanders are holding out hope that the next America's Cup race will be hosted in Newport, Rhode Island that will likely be held in  2013 or 2014.

The last America's Cup was held in Newport in 1983, ending the longest winning streak in sporting history.

The New York Yacht Club's 132-year hold on the trophy was given up to the Australian syndicate representing the Royal Perth Yacht Club. They won the regatta and match race and gained the America's Cup in 1983.

The trophy has most recently been captured by US-based BMW Oracle Racing, owned by billionaire Larry Ellison.

Oracle Racing won the 33rd America's Cup regatta in February 2010, representing the Golden Gate Yacht Club.

The economic benefits of bringing the 2013 America's Cup back to Newport, Rhode Island would be great news for the ailing state, struggling with a large budget deficit and close to a 12.5% unemployment rate. Thousands of jobs and millions of dollars could be pumped into Rhode Island's economy.

Perhaps the fact that software billionaire Larry Ellison recently purchased Astors’ Beechwood Mansion on Bellevue Avenue in Newport is an indication that the America's Cup may indeed come to Rhode Island, however the Providence Journal states that Ellison's first choice is San Francisco.

A decision on the host city won't be made for months, so Rhode Island can still hold out hope.
