Appearing like crooks to the world, that's the charge.
By President Obama’s use of words today, the result from Republican Congressional representatives actions to close government and to threaten economic default is “extortion” and may go on the books as the great American shakedown (author’s word).
Making threats and dares, both of which are employed in the current process, makes America appear third world, doesn’t it?
the practice of obtaining something, esp. money, through force or threats.
synonyms: blackmail, shakedown"
The Republicans have truly lost their way and are not operating in bounds of the American political system as intended and desired. It seems that if President Obama truly believes that they are extorting and blackmailing, he may need to take the matter to the Supreme Court via the Justice Department for adjudication.
Holding America hostage is a crime, is it not? Blackmail is an act, often a crime, involving unjustified threats to make a gain or cause loss to another unless a demand is met.
Is the President being flippant or is he developing a charge that can stick?
The Constitutional lawyer knows the law.
“Obama says he fights GOP because “we can’t make extortion routine as part of our democracy”

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama says he’s fighting the budget battle because “we can’t make extortion routine as part of our democracy.”
Obama says he’s willing to not only negotiate fiscal issues with Republicans, but changes to health care law. But he says first he wants them to pass a bill to stop a partial government shutdown.
Obama noted in a news conference at the White House Tuesday that the shutdown already made him cancel a trip to Asia this week. He argued the shutdown is hurting U.S. credibility around the world and — quote — “makes it look like we don’t have our act together.”
