Amelia Island is located near Jacksonville, Florida and is the host for the annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. This year’s event will be on the weekend of March 9-10-11 on the very well manicured fairways of The Golf Club of Amelia Island at Summer Beach and the Ritz-Carlton hotel.
Start planning now to immerse yourself into a weekend of classic automotive culture. Advance tickets are $50.00 at www.ameliaconcours.org and area motel rooms and airline seats are starting to become scarce. You will need sunglasses, sun screen, a hat, comfortable walking shoes and your best camera with a spare battery and plenty of media storage capacity.
Significant celebrations at this year’s Concours are: Mercedes-Benz “SL” 60th anniversary, Ferrari GTO 50th anniversary and the 50th anniversary of the Daytona 24-hours. Mercedes-Benz is bringing the 1952 300-SL LeMans victory car, the Daytona winning Porsche 917K will be on display and you can expect a large gathering of Ferrari GTOs. Also, there is a rumor the Stan Mott’s will be on display.
A presentation of Hollywood Star Cars will include the Tom Mix Cord 812, Rita Hayworth’s Ghia-bodied Cadillac, Natalie Wood’s Mercedes-Benz 300-SL and Ginger Roger’s 1929 Duesenberg.
A unique feature event during the Amelia Concours weekend is the automotive celebrity seminars. This year will feature a World Championship of Sports Cars seminar
recounting the Ferrari versus Cobra racing wars. Great Endurance Drivers take the dais to tell of their past deeds of daring…on and off the track. Vic Elford, Sam Posey, Hurley Haywood, Joe Buzetta, Derek Bell & Brian Redman will be there.
Two classic car auctions are also on tap on Amelia Island during the weekend. The next installment of “Classic Car Examiner” will provide more information on the RM and Gooding and Company auctions and some of the historic vehicles that will cross their auction blocks.
