AMC has renewed the Golden Globe Award nominated horror drama series "The Walking Dead for a fifth season, and Darkwoods Productions, Circle of Confusion and Valhalla Entertainment will begin production on season five in early 2014. The show's casting directors in Los Angeles and Atlanta will begin holding auditions for new series regulars, recurring roles, guest stars, and day plaers. Actors may be considered as long as they are eligible to work in Atlanta and in the United States. Shooting takes place in the state of Georgia. The extras and stand-ins are cast throughout the entire season on a daily basis as needed. The series is based on the comic book series of the same name by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard.

"The Walking Dead" is centered around Rick Grimes, a small-town police officer from Cynthiana, Kentucky, his family, and a number of other survivors who have banded together in order to survive after the world is overrun with zombies or as The Walking Dead characters call them, Walkers. As the series progresses, the characters become more developed, and their personalities shift under the stress of a zombie apocalypse. Fighting growing despair — and sometimes each other — the group searches for a secure location which they can finally call home. Season 5 begins with Rick and the group is heading to Washington DC, where they meet new danger and a new enemy. Once again, Rick must do whatever it takes to keep the rest of the group safe.

Two-time Daytime Emmy Award nominee Scott M. Gimple returns for season five as executive producer and showrunner. Gimple took over the duties from Glen Mazzara in December, 2012. Dave Alpert and Robert Kirkman executive produce for Circle of Confusion. Primetime Emmy Award nominee Tom Luse and five-time Primetime Emmy Award winner Gregory Nicotero also executive produce along with Independent Spirit Awards winner and Valhalla Entertainment CEO Gale Anne Hurd.
