AMC have announced that they are in the early developmental stages of creating a spinoff of their successful series, The Walking Dead. Walking Dead’s Robert Kirkman and Gale Anne Hurd will be executive producing, with the series to be released in 2015.
The “companion series,” as AMC has taken to calling it, is intended to provide a different look at the apocalyptic world that The Walking Dead is based in. Having devoted a great deal of attention to the characters of the series, it is not surprising that the writers would want to branch out. Assuming that the spinoff is going to be set in a completely different location, this move could help to make the apocalypse feel more universal.
“Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer,” said Charlie Collier, AMC’s president and general manager. “We look forward to working with Robert, Gale and Dave again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters. It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.”
