AMC and Sony Pictures Television confirmed today that they have reached a licensing agreement for a spin-off of Vince Gilligan’s Breaking Bad. As conceived, the new series is based on the show’s popular Saul Goodman character (Bob Odenkirk) with the working title Better Call Saul.
That's just a fancy way of saying that Better Call Saul is officially being developed at AMC.
Earlier this summer Odenkirk announced his interest in such a series at AMC's TCA presentation, noting that "if Vince wrote it, it's going to be awesome," so he would be honored to be a part of it. At the time, Gilligan himself said he really hoped the spin-off would happen, so today must be extra special for him. While he has not officially been announced as showrunning this new series, we can't imagine it going any other way, can you?
This spin-off will be a one-hour prequel that will focus on the evolution of the popular Saul Goodman character before he ever became Walter White’s lawyer.
Other details will be added as announced.
Breaking Bad is airing its final few episodes on AMC on Sunday nights at 9 p.m. Will you watch Better Call Saul? Leave us your thoughts in the comments below!
