Amber Portwood has been out of prison for over a month now.
Since her release, she has been focused on getting on her feet and getting re-acquainted with her daughter, five-year-old Leah, after going nearly a year and a half with seeing her just 5 times.
Now that she is a free woman, the former Teen Mom is more focused than ever on becoming a good mother and provider for Leah and in her first post-prison interview, Amber is revealing what its like adjusting to her brand new life, away from the big house -- and away from drugs.
"Before prison, I never thought about Leah. I was addicted to drugs and didn’t care about anything else," Amber tells In Touch Weekly in her first, December 11, interview since her November 4 release from Indiana’s Rockville Correctional Facility. "Prison saved my life — and gave me a second chance at being a mother."
However, things weren't always so positive for Amber behind bars. While she eventually looked at the experience as a way to grow and rid her life of addiction, it first felt like the worst possible scenario.
"It felt like a nightmare," Amber explains. "Feeling humiliated and vulnerable (from the strip search), you literally have nothing and walk around like a zombie. There were times I reached a breaking point. I knew the only person who could get me out of there was me."
Luckily, Amber did what was needed for an early release and got out in record time. Now, it's up to her to follow through with all of her future plans.
