Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort cut the ribbon on its newest run yesterday, the Ambassadors Glade, at the perfect time. The ski resort picked up more than 30 inches of new snow over the past couple of days and over 100 inches in the past few weeks.
Resort owners Chuck and Sue Cobb, for whom the run was named, performed the official ribbon-cutting at 10 a.m. Thursday morning in a ceremony at the entrance to the Glade. The Ambassadors Glade, which is served by the six-passenger Purgatory Express high-speed chairlift, is named in honor of Chuck and Sue’s respective U.S. Ambassadorships to Iceland and Jamaica.
The new black-diamond run adds 40 acres of new tree skiing and comes on the heels of last season’s Legends expansion, which opened 125 acres of expert terrain. Over the past two seasons, Durango Mountain Resort has increased its expert terrain offering by more than 35 percent.
The Ambassadors Glade is accessible from the trail Mercy or at the bottom of the trail What. The terrain in the new glade is varied and offers something for all expert-level skiers and snowboarders. The skier’s left side of the run is lower angle and provides the opportunity to work on tree-skiing skills in a more open setting. The skier’s right side of the run is much steeper and has small drops and powder pillows for more adventurous skiers and riders.
