Some people may or may not know that Amazon is a gay-friendly company. In fact, their new Kindle Paperwhite e-reader commercial proves their support for the LGBT community. Released on Feb. 20, 2013, the commercial has been viewed over 600,000 times. However, the new ad is receiving mixed reviews.
According to AdWeek’s article today, the Kindle Paperwhite e-reader is leaving some reviewers ecstatic, while others say the gay theme has nothing to do with the plot or product. We are also seeing various conservative commenters with expected reactions. The commercial features a man and woman at the beach. The man is trying to read using an e-reader but the glare is too much.
The woman (Anna Zielinski) tells the man about how the new Kindle Paperwhite e-reader is perfect for reading in the sun. As the two are sitting there, the man orders himself the new e-reader on his tablet. He then suggests they should celebrate. At first, one would think the two were hitting it off.
She responds with, “My husband is bringing me a drink right now.” He replies, “So is mine!” The camera then turns to the two husbands at the bar.
Amazon is not the only company who are in support of the LGBT community.
In May 2012, we saw JCPenney receive some heat from an anti-gay group called One Million Moms. One Million Moms boycotted JCPenney for featuring lesbians in their ad. This did not startle the retailer because for Father’s Day, they decided to feature two fathers in another ad. To see the JCPenney ad, click here.
