Amazon opens sports memorabilia shop

Sports Memorabilia  -  Amazon.com  (Nasdaq: AMZN) has opened a new Sports Collectibles Store on its site, which began operations on February 2nd.  Sports collectors can now purchase over two million unique collectibles from major sports leagues on the giant retailer's site.

As of Sunday, Amazon was listing memorabilia with market values that range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars.  Those items included a Lebron James signed basketball, Eli Manning autographed football, and a Tom Brady signed mini-helmet.

"Our customers have told us that when purchasing sports collectibles they highly value authenticity, which is why we have teamed with some of the top sports collectibles sellers in the world to provide unique items with easy to find authentication and condition information," said Peter Faricy, vice president of Amazon Marketplace.

The sports memorabilia market is a $2 billion industry, and there about 17 million sports collectors worldwide.  Given Amazon's status as a Fortune 200 company, online shoppers can gain confidence that their purchase results in delivery of authentic products and not fake or fraudulent items.

Similar to what Wal-Mart has done with local shops, Amazon's move is expected to displace niche sports memorabilia websites as well as Ebay sellers.

"We have a history of providing customers with authentic jerseys, cleats and photos signed by the world’s most iconic players, and we’re excited about expanding this tradition and reaching millions of potential new customers through Amazon," said Dan Jamieson, CEO of Icons, official licensee of FIFA.
